

Leon was born to the late Jackson and Julia Nobles Leggett Spell in Baxley, GA on November 15, 1933. He attended Appling county schools. He served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955, during which he served in the Korean War. He transferred to the U. S. Naval Reserve and then went on to join the Air Force in 1957. He was proud to have participated in the 2017 Honor Flight to Washington, D. C.
In 1963, Leon and his brother, Royce, joined together to open a new business, Leggett Brothers Electric, on St. Simons Island. Leon retired from Leggett Brothers Electric in 2004 and then began working for Glynn County Government as the County Electrical Inspector until his second retirement in 2011. While at Leggett Brothers Electric, he encouraged all and helped many of his employees learn the electrical trade and acquire their licenses.
Leon was a lover of golf and spent many memorable days on the course with his tightknit group of friends. He was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan, having travelled to many home games in Athens, and, more recently, he never missed a televised game.
He was a member of Glyndale Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and was a member of the Finance Committee. He was also a member of the Lion’s Club, the American Legion, and spent many years as a coach for youth team sports.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Leggett and Wilbur Leggett; a sister, Louise Deen; and his eldest daughter, Melonie Chambers.
He is survived by his wife, Peggie; two daughters, Julia Teston and Teri Wright, both of Brunswick; two sons, Leon D. Leggett, Jr. (Allison) of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Curtis Leggett (Kim) of St. Simons Island; and a brother, Royce Leggett (Alice) of St. Simons Island . He is also survived by ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, a great-great granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at Glyndale Baptist Church at 11 am Thursday, December 2, 2021 with the Reverend Ken Creekmore officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held at the church Thursday morning, December 2, 2021 from 10:30 am until the funeral hour. Burial will follow at Brunswick Memorial Park Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Deacons of the church. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons.
The family wishes to formally thank the staff of Hospice of the Golden Isles, in particular Nurse Miriam Cristobal, for their compassionate care for Leon during his illness.
