Lucy was born in Max Meadows, VA. She graduated from Marion Junior College and received her B.A. from Madison College, Harrisonburg, VA. In 1956, she came to St. Simons to teach in the Glynn County School System. On her first day of school, she met her lifelong partner, Harold E. Zell, whom she married the following year in Max Meadows, VA. For many years, she managed Lucy Zell Antiques specializing in English and French Country furnishing. She traveled extensively through England and Europe. While shopping for antiques in England, she became accomplished at driving a truck on the left side of the road!
Lucy loved and cared for her family and her delight was her ten year old granddaughter.
She also participated in an investment group, played bridge, read extensively concentrating on history and genealogy. She traced her family roots in this country back to the Revolution and also explored her family’s Scottish heritage. Lucy was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Brunswick, where she taught Sunday school for many years, and later joined the St. Simons Presbyterian Church.
Lucy is survived by her husband, Harold E. Zell, her daughter, Carla H. Zell, her son, H. Dickey Zell, her daughter-in-law, Charlotte Azcuna Zell and her granddaughter, Brooke Azcuna Zell.
Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Edo Miller Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles. Arrangements are under the direction of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home.
