Malcolm Millican Kitchens was born February 15, 1937 in Daviston, AL to Vernon C. and Malone H. Kitchens. At a young age, Malcolm moved to Sand Mountain, AL where he graduated from Albertville High School in 1954. He attended Auburn University, known then as Alabama Polytechnical Institute, pledged Phi Kappa Tau, and graduated in 1958. He served a short stint in the Navy and was stationed at Glynco in Brunswick, GA where he met Polly Parker Kitchens and was married on December 28, 1961. Malcolm was always the center of any event and never met a stranger. He was active in the Golden Isles Auburn Club, Christ Church Frederica where he served as a chalice bearer, lay reader and docent, and gave many tours of the Golden Isles as a tour guide for a couple of local tour companies. For many years, he would decorate both his house and Queen’s Court with Christmas lights, even winning a local Christmas light contest. He loved being part of his breakfast groups, The Mallory Café during the weekdays and Frederica Café during the weekend. In addition, he enjoyed Garage Sale shopping with his friends. One of his fondest memories was being a peanut Brigadier for Jimmy Carter’s presidential campaigns.
He is predeceased by his wife, Polly Parker Kitchens, his brothers, Vernon, Charles and Lyle Kitchens. He is survived by his daughter, Malone Kitchens Moore and her husband, Robert and his granddaughters, Carter and Erin Moore all of Columbus, GA, sister in laws, Jean Kitchens, of Temple, TX, Janet Kitchens of McComb, MS and Laura Parker Carrico of Raleigh, NC and a special friend, Sarah DuBignon, of Atlanta along with many cousins, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given to Christ Church, Frederica. Service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at Christ Church Frederica.
