After the death of her parents at age 10, she spent the next six years in Louisiana, Missouri, Georgia, and Alabama with aunts and uncles. Margie attended Glynn Academy and kept house for her two brothers. She graduated from Glynn Academy in 1950 and went to work at Coastal Chevrolet. In the spring of 1951, Margie met Bob Wendel who was in the Coast Guard and assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter Briar in Brunswick. They were married in October 1951. When Bob left the Coast Guard, he and Margie returned to his hometown of Rochester, NY. They lived there until 1958. Deciding that the snow was not much fun, they returned to Brunswick to establish their forever home.
When their children were all of school age, Margie went to work for the Glynn County Board of Education working in the transportation, maintenance, and print shop offices. She retired in 2004 after 35 years of service.
For many years, Margie was active in the First United Methodist Church of Brunswick serving as the Children’s Education Director, VBS Director and various other positions of service. Margie was also very active in the Georgia Republican Women’s group for several years. She loved to talk politics with anyone who would listen. Margie loved to dance and enjoyed being a member of the Golden Isles Cloggers. While living at HomeLIfe, she often entertained the staff with her dancing.
In addition to her parents, Margie was preceded in death by her brothers Dorman and Carroll McDonald.
