Mary Adele Bantly Irvin, 89, of St. Simons Island, formerly of Asheville, North Carolina, died peacefully on August 23, 2014 in her home at Marsh’s Edge. She succumbed from complications due to Alzheimer’s disease.
Mary was born in Manchester, CT., on Valentine’s Day, 1925. She graduated from Edgewood Park Junior College, and enrolled in the Connecticut Citizens Defense Corps as a Nurses’ Aide during World War II. She met her husband, Samuel Lowe Irvin, who was raised in Columbia, South Carolina, on a blind date after the war, and they were married on December 7, 1946. They lived in Asheville, North Carolina, for 45 years before moving to St. Simons Island in 2001.
After her youngest son went to college, Mary fulfilled a lifelong dream by opening “Mary’s Folly,” an upscale ladies’ dress boutique in Asheville. She never met a stranger and in her later years always wanted to touch your hand and say “I love you.”
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Lowe Irvin in 2005, her parents, Adele Morgan and Ernest Bantly, her sisters, Jane Behnke and Nancy Alesbury, and a brother, Ted Bantly.
She is survived by her second brother, Robert Bantly (Betty), of Hardwick, Vermont.
Mary is also survived by her four children: Janet Crowder (Rob), Mirror Lake, New Hampshire; Anne Aspinwall (Mike), St. Simons Island; Sam Irvin (Gary Bowers), Los Angeles, California, and Tim Irvin, San Francisco, California.
She is survived by five grandchildren: Paige Covert (Bill), Dover, New Hampshire; Robin Durawa (Matt), New York, New York; Dana Aspinwall (Greg Plog), Marietta; David Aspinwall (Susan), Atlanta; and Ryan Crowder (Andreza), Dover, New Hampshire.
Additionally, “Mimi” is survived by ten great grandchildren: Charlie and Pearce Covert; Molly and Will Durawa; Morgan and Hayden Plog; Matthew and Ben Aspinwall; and Sam and Vince Crowder.
She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful nurses, CNAs, and staff at Marsh’s Edge, her home for the last three plus years, and the staff at the Hospice of the Golden Isles.
A family service will be held in Asheville at a later date.
In memory of Mary, donations may be made to The Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525, or the Historic Cabin Restoration Fund of the Cassina Garden Club, PO Box 20191, St. Simons, GA 31522.
