
Mary Fisher Barber, age 90, of Darien, Ga., died on Wednesday August 11, 2010 at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick, Georgia after a short illness.
Mrs. Barber was born at Ashantilly in McIntosh County, Georgia on November 5, 1919, the daughter of John Henry Fisher and Ann Elizabeth McCosker Fisher of McIntosh County.
She was a graduate of Glynn Academy in Brunswick, Georgia and Young Harris College in Young Harris, Georgia. Mary was an excellent athlete, playing softball, basketball and serving as a summer life guard in the Brunswick Area.
On July 20, 1942, she was married to Joseph Glynn Stewart of Brunswick. Mr. Stewart served in the U.S. Army during World War II and following the war was employed by Diamond Construction Company of Savannah. The company’s work consisted of marine construction and they were located at numerous locations on the east coast from Annapolis, Maryland to Key West, Florida. Mr. Stewart died in Savannah on April 5, 1973. After Mr. Stewart’s death, Mary built a home and moved to the Ridge Road in McIntosh County.
In 1978, she married John Allen Barber of North Carolina and they settles at her home in McIntosh County, where she resided until her death. Mr. Barber died on April 17, 2008.
She was an avid fisherman all her life and particularly enjoyed the fishing in McIntosh County. Some of her more memorial times was staying at “The Camp” on the Inland Waterway near Doboy Island with her brother (William Fisher) and his family and their friends. In her latter years she enjoyed gardening, painting and bridge.
Mrs. Barber had no children, but is survived by numerous nieces and nephews some of whom reside in McIntosh County. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, John Fisher, Rosa Fisher Howell, Annie Fisher Gill, Charles (Mac) Fisher, William Fisher and Joaquin Fisher.
Mrs. Barber chose to be cremated. A Graveside service will be held for her at 10:00 AM on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at St. Andrews Cemetery in McIntosh County, Georgia.
