

Mrs. Jones was born April 17, 1931, in Statesboro, Georgia, to the late Ernest and Louise Youngblood. She was raised in Jesup, Georgia, and later attended Agnes Scott College before receiving a degree in Home Economics from the University of Georgia in 1953.
Mrs. Jones married fellow classmate and high school sweetheart Dr. Hurley D. Jones on August 14, 1953. Dr. and Mrs. Jones raised four children as Dr. Jones began his career as a beloved cardiologist in Brunswick, Georgia.
As a dedicated and accomplished lifelong learner, Mrs. Jones earned a Master’s in Business Administration from Georgia Southern University in 1975 and a Masters in Accounting from the University of Georgia, passing the CPA examination in 1977. Mrs. Jones went on to attend John Marshall Law School and was admitted to the state bar in 1979.
Mrs. Jones had a distinguished career as Chief Trust Officer at American National Bank for fourteen years, one of few women to reach this level of distinction in her field during this time.
Mrs. Jones was a proud and active resident of the Golden Isles community. She was an avid UGA football fan, a love that first began during her time in college watching Hurley play football for the Georgia Bulldogs. She was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church at Frederica where she regularly participated in Sunday school class and her treasured Prime Timers group.
Mary Virginia Jones was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Dr. Hurley D. Jones, her parents, her two sisters, and her brother.
She is survived by her four loving children: Marsha Certain of Darien, GA; Sherry Barrett (Richard) of Greenville, SC; Elizabeth Sudduth of St. Simons Island, GA; and Mitchell Jones (Sherri) of St. Simons Island. Mrs. Jones is also survived by her brother-in-law, Moffett Kendrick; eight grandchildren: Matthew Certain, Helen Rentz (Jeff), Elizabeth Blount (Carl), Drew Barrett, Lauren Sudduth, Cole Sudduth, Will Jones, Henry Jones; and nine great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family expresses its deepest appreciation to Mrs. Jones’ devoted caregivers Linda Harrington, Vivian Peterson, Lautrese Thomas, Judy Dean, and the in-home nurses and medical staff of Hospice of The Golden Isles.
Her family plans a private service to honor her life.
