Loving son of Jack Medley and Sara Marxen. Beloved grandson of Elizabeth (late Paul) Marxen, and Sharyn and Paul Medley. Dear nephew of Sandra Marxen, Charles Marxen, Douglas (Patti) Marxen, Jeffrey Marxen, Victoria (Carl) Dirkes, Martin (Kelly) Marxen and Paula (Mike) Sisson. Cherished cousin of 14 and true friend to all.
Matthew was born in Medina on January 31, 1992 and graduated from Lutheran High School West, the Ohio Center for Broadcasting, and Ohio Media School.
Matthew was a man of many talents and shared his passion for sports and music with countless friends. Over the last few years, his work as Sportswriter and broadcaster grew into a promising career. Matthew was a leading voice in covering and promoting all forms of boys and girls high school sports and was followed by thousands on social media. His incisive and witty tweets and blog posts were referenced and credited by the highest levels of sports journalism. His work included coverage of Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association and NCAA Football. His freelance and staff writer positions included NEO Sports Insiders, The Morning Journal, The Elyria Chronicle-Telegram, AP Radio and Hoops Hype. Though he was objective and professional in his work, few could match his knowledge and fanaticism for all things Cleveland, especially his beloved Cavs, Browns, and most favorite Indians.
Matthew excelled in the choral and musical theater programs at Lutheran West. He developed a knack for crafting his own musical style with great songs like “Waiting for Sunrise,” “The Takeover” and “See in the Dark.” He gained notoriety as a hip hop singer/songwriter performing in venues across the Cleveland area and as far away as Denver, Colorado.
Matthew had a boisterous, infectious laugh and a quirky, ironic sense of humor. He was engaged in social justice causes and worked hard to promote peace and unity. More importantly, his generous heart truly cared for people. Matt mentored young broadcasting students and was always there to help people in need. Many often remarked how generous he was with tutoring aspiring writers, and providing overall assistance to friends, cousins and many, many other people.
Friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life service on Sunday, August 13th at 1:00 PM at Medina Community Church, 416 South Broadway Street, Medina, OH 44256. A catered reception and extended fellowship will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested in his memory to Cleveland Indians Charities RBI Program or Ohio Media School’s Scholarship Program.
