Philip is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jean M. Sullivan; his children, Michelle S. Markel and her husband Matthew J. Markel and four grandchildren, Riley S. Markel, Grace M. Markel, Avery E. Markel, and Owen M. Markel of The Woodlands, Texas; Timothy P. Sullivan of Jacksonville Beach, Florida; his brother Francis R. Sullivan and his wife Diane L. Sullivan of Ossipee, New Hampshire.
Philip was born on May 31, 1938 in Miami, Florida and is preceded in death by his parents Philip H. Sullivan Sr. and Margaret C. Sullivan of Braintree, Massachusetts.
Philip graduated from Boston College High School in 1956. He went on to graduate as an ROTC student from Boston College in 1960. He began his 26 year military career and completed Airborne School in Ft. Benning, GA in 1960. His duties included tours in Korea and Vietnam. Philip was a highly decorated soldier, awarded many high honors including The Legion of Merit with One Oak Leaf Cluster, The Bronze Star, and The Defense Meritorious Service Medal. In addition to his military honors, he completed a Masters Degree in Psychology from The American University in August 1974 and also graduated from the prestigious Command and General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas in June 1975.
Philip was the consummate family man and leaves a legacy of love and generosity for which he will be remembered forever. He was a sentimental man and always shared his affection with his family without reserve. He was also an incredibly active grandfather and loved to whistle and sing his favorite old tunes with his “kids.” He was passionate about the game of golf and thoroughly enjoyed his role as Starter at the Sea Island Golf Course. Philip never missed an opportunity to tell a “true story” or make a new friend, especially one with a heritage in New England. Philip lived to a very high standard of responsibility, reliability, courage, generosity, and honor in every facet of his life.
