

Ray was born in Waterloo, Iowa, to Bob and Reva White. He joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 18 and served at Glynco for four years active duty and also served in the reserves for two years. After the military he returned to Iowa where he worked as a Detective for the Iowa City Police Department while attending the University of Iowa, graduating in 1968. Ray then returned to South Georgia in 1970, became a real estate agent in 1973 and a real estate broker in 1976. Four years later he moved to the Atlanta area where he worked and lived for 10 years. Ray then returned to St. Simons Island and has lived here for the last 20 years.
He was active in commercial and residential real estate and served many civic organizations including but not limited to serving as the past President of the St. Simons Island Jaycees, Past National Director of the US Jaycees, Past Commander of multiple American Legion Posts, Past Vice Chair of the Glynn County Republicans, former board member of the International Seafarer Center, Past Council President of the Navy League, Member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Member of the local Chamber of Commerce, member of the Gideon’s, member and moderator for the Association of Georgia R.E. Exchangors and the Florida R.E. Exchangors and was a member of North Island Church on St. Simons Island. Ray enjoyed cooking, was an avid Chess player and loved the political arena. He will be missed by many, many people.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Robert White and a granddaughter, Nicole Meeks.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary White of St. Simons Island; a daughter, Ramah (Sam) Meeks; a son, Raymond “Bill” White, Jr. (Mary Beth); seven grandchildren, Heather Childers, Travis Meeks, Joshua Burton, Nicole White, Daniel White, Nathanael White and David White; three great-grandchildren, Branden and Amanda Childers and Dylan Hall; two brothers, James and John White and several cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
A celebration of Ray’s life will be held Saturday, May 26th at 11:00 am in the Chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home with Pastor Mack Tucker officiating. Active pallbearers will be Joshua Burton, Wesley White, Sam Meeks, Tom Roberts, Robert Vasquez and Tim Hightower. Honorary pallbearers will be US Congressman Jack Kingston, Charles Wilson, Rick Teeter, Commander Bob Snow, Mike Mattingly and Donald Strand.
Burial with military honors will be Tuesday at 2:30 pm at Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Veterans Cemetery Road, Canton, GA. 30114.
