

Richard “Dick” Markline, 90, of St. Simons Island, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2013, at a friend’s home in Waynesville, GA.
Dick was born on May 10, 1923 in Madonna, Maryland to George Adam Markline and Edith May (Wisoitzkey) Markline. He attended Jarrettsville Elementary (1936) and High School (1940). After graduation he worked in construction, in the building of Camp Rodman in Aberdeen, MD, and later at the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Plant.
Dick served in the Army Air Corp from 1945 to 1947 as a Staff Sergeant, and was awarded the American Theatre ribbon, the World War II Victory Medal and a Presidential Unit Citation. He was employed by Baltimore Gas & Electric for 37 years, as a Draftsman, and later promoted to Supervisor of Project Design.
Dick married Mary Virginia “Ginny” Bailey in 1942, and they were wed for 43 years, before her death in September of 1985. Dick married Artha “Lou” Bruce on October 3, 1986, and they were wed for 25 years before her death in February of 2012. Dick and Lou moved to St. Simons Island in 1988, and lived in the Sea Palms community, for the next 25 years.
Dick enjoyed golf, bowling and traveling, taking numerous trips to Hawaii, Casa de Campo, Jamaica and Mexico. He and Lou were very active with the Brunswick Citizens on Patrol, Kiwanis and served as secretaries for the official newsletter of C Company, 5th Engineer Battalion, 5th Marine Division. Dick was also inducted as an honorary member of the local Marine Corps League, Glynco Detachment No. 716, and a member of The Golden Isles Council of the Navy League of the United States.
Dick is survived by dear friends Karen & Bill Lightbown of St. Simons Island, GA, Justin & Winslet Watson of Savannah, GA and Kenneth and Michelle Stewart of Artesia, NM.
A celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, December 19 at 11:00, at St. William Catholic Church, with Monsignor John Kenneally officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in Dick’s honor to Heartland Hospice Services, 664 Scranton Road, Unit 103, Brunswick, GA 31520.
