They soon returned to their former hometown of Brunswick, where Bob (then known as “Bobby”) spent the rest of his childhood. He attended Sidney Lanier Elementary School, Prep Junior High and Glynn Academy, graduating from the latter in 1946.
He served in the U.S. Air Force in the far east during the late 1940s.. Mary was the daughter of George Calvert Steuart (a native of Brunswick, who was the last child raised on Black Banks Plantation on St. Simons Island and a descendant of James Gould, builder of the first lighthouse on St. Simons Island circa 1811) and Alice Wilson Steuart (a native of Atlanta).
After graduation, Bob and Mary lived in Brunswick for a couple of years. He then went to work for the Satilla Wood Company for a number of years and resided in Waycross with Mary and their children. In 1963, he joined Brunswick Pulp & Paper Co. as a District Manager in Cochran for one year and then in Dublin, GA. In 1973, he became a sawmill superintendent for the Davis Lumber Co. in Albany, GA. He retired from the forest-products industry in 1987 and sold lots in two subdivisions that he developed on the Satilla River in Brantley Co. and just west of Waycross in Ware Co.
Bob and Mary had three children, Robert “Gary” Wainright, Jeffery “Jeff” Steuart Wainright and Amy Kathleen Wainright Warren, all of whom survived him. Mary passed away in 1978 following a lengthy fight against breast cancer. Gary lives on St. Simons Island, GA and is married to Rebecca “Becky” Schwegman Wainright. They have two sons, Reeve J. Wainright and Robert “Bobby” J. Wainright.
