Sands Coy Iler, 93, of Townsend, Georgia entered peacefully into eternal rest Wednesday, April 29, 2020 with his family by his side. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Heartland Hospice for their compassionate and professional care.
Sands Iler was born April 23, 1927 in Daisy, Georgia the son of the late Virgil Moore and Nila Rea Iler. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of seventy-one years, Dorothy Louise Iler; two sons, Gary “Gabo” and Ron Iler.
Sands resided in Claxton, Georgia during his early childhood and teenage years and graduated from Claxton High School. He served his country with honor in the United States Navy. After his Honorable Discharge from the service, he met the love of his life Dorothy Rushing. They were married in 1947 and were blessed with five wonderful children. He was a successful car salesman and was employed with Tarratus Oldsmobile and later J.C. Lewis Ford. He then moved his family to Statesboro, where he was the Sales Manager with Curtis Youngblood Ford for ten years. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
After his retirement in 1978 he and his wife moved to Shellman Bluff, Georgia, and with the help of their two sons they began to operate the Shellman Fish Camp for twenty-one years. He was also a member of Shellman Bluff Baptist Church. He was also a past member of Forest City Gun Club and Sapelo Saltwater Fishing Club. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Left to cherish his memories are his son Glenn Iler of Shellman Bluff; two daughters, Gwenn Chester (Adrian) of Statesboro, GA and Sandra I Dobbins (Don) of Statesboro, GA; a sister, Loucretia Hollingsworth of Mobile, AL; a sister-in-law, Mary Tuten of Savannah, GA. Eight grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Sands was a great sportsman and outdoorsman. Later in his life he enjoyed playing golf with his sons. He was a people person and never met a stranger. He loved life and was a great story teller.
Due to the current event, a private family graveside service will be held Sunday, May 3, 2020 in Shellman Bluff Baptist Cemetery with Pastor Brad Butler officiating. Active Pallbearers serving will be Bill Mercer, Jim Bruner, and Jim Cooler.
In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to Shellman Bluff Baptist Church.
