Sloane was born on March 21, 2024 to Drew and Erin Simpson, joining big sister Andi. Despite her short time on earth, she was deeply loved and brought immense joy to those around her.
Sloane came into the world in quite a hurry, requiring an emergency c-section at 32 weeks gestation due to a previously undiagnosed condition called congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). She spent the first 2 months of her life in Savannah, GA in the NICU where her hernia was repaired. However, she developed severe swelling which complicated her recovery, and was sent to the Children’s Hospital of Georgia (Augusta) in May. During her stay in Augusta, it was discovered that Sloane had a lymphatic abnormality causing her swelling, and she was transferred to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for treatment in June. After many extensive scans, it was determined that Sloane had a very rare abnormality of her lymphatic system, which ultimately would require surgery to attempt to correct. Sloane was able to have the surgery and it was successful, however over the course of her long hospitalization and severity of her illness she developed obstructive cardiomyopathy which unfortunately did not allow the lymphatic fluid to drain as it should, and she passed away from this complication at 7 months old.
Over the course of her too short life, Sloane proved that she had a strong will to live and fought bravely until the very end. She was known amongst all of the nursing staff to be a feisty little girl who loved being the center of attention.
She is survived by her loving family, parents Drew & Erin, big sister Andi, multiple grandparents, great grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
A graveside service will be held at Chapel Park Cemetery in Brunswick, GA on Friday November 15, 2024 at 11 am. The family will be wearing colorful clothing to celebrate Sloane’s legacy and invite guests to join them as well.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Ronald McDonald House Charities, as they were instrumental in keeping the family together during the past few months.
