Thurston Eugene Smith Jr.

Gene was born on April 10, 1936 in Hazelhurst, Georgia to Thurston Eugene Smith, Sr. and Margaret Eleanor Wilkes Smith. He graduated from R.E. Lee Institute in 1955 and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955-1959. He then graduated from Southern Tech in 1965.

On April 1, 1967, he married the love of his life, the late Janie Doster Smith and they shared 58 wonderful years of marriage. Gene was a devoted husband, brother, father, and grandfather.

He is survived by his brother, Richard Michael Smith; sister, Eleanor Whitfield; three sons, Jeremy, Jonathan, and Joel; daughter-in-law, Katy; and daughter-in-love, Carolyn. He was especially proud of his two beloved grandsons, Dylan and Jacob.

Gene will be remembered for his devotion to his family and his service to his country.

In lieu of a service, there will be a visitation with the family on Saturday Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home in Brunswick. Family and friends are invited to gather to share memories honoring Gene’s life.
