Alice was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, the fourth child of John Anderson Sharpe and Nellie Maude Sharpe (Clark). The family later moved to Bass River, Nova Scotia, where her father continued to be a supervisor for Penobscot Development Company.
The Sharpes were a close-knit family with Alice and her siblings spending much time together playing tennis, enjoying music, going to the beach, and “squabbling” over household chores. Alice and her siblings were very competitive, a trait that never left Alice.
Alice moved west to Calgary, Alberta in 1951, to pursue her career in teaching. She spent many years as a teacher, and cherished the friendships that she made with students and colleagues alike. She taught at Windsor Park School and Dalhousie Elementary for many years and ended her career at King George Elementary school.
Her competitive spirit continued with her during her life. She joined the Mount Pleasant Tennis Club soon after she moved to Calgary where she competed in and won many tournaments. Her championship pictures adorn the walls and photo albums at the club. She continued playing tennis until two years ago. Alice was also a very competitive Scrabble player. Her vocabulary and use of the English language in Scrabble and otherwise were both impressive and fascinating to others. Alice enjoyed playing the piano…often the traditional hymns. She found it relaxing…as did her family while listening.
Alice had a strong Christian faith and was an active member of the Calgary First Church of the Nazarene for most of her life. Alice treasured the many friendships she had through the church, and remained an active member until her passing. She taught Sunday school for many years and last served as a greeter at the church until the time of her passing. She received a “Distinguished Service Award” for her many contributions to the church. It was at the Church of the Nazarene where she met her husband, Daniel Robb. Alice and Danny were blessed with three children, Mary Ann Jones (Kelvin) of Medicine Hat, Albert; Tom Robb, of Calgary, Alberta and Larry Robb (Lori) of Spring Creek, Nevada.
In addition to her children, Alice is survived by her sisters Helen Barnes of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia; Hazel (Frank) Locke, of Brookfield, Nova Scotia; grandchildren, Raegan (Chris) Penkoff, Calgary, John (Chardelle) Jones, of Medicine Hat, Alberta; Courtney (Cam) Drescher, of Medicine Hat, Alberta; Zachary (Kat) Robb, of Elko, Nevada; Caleb Robb, of Spring Creek, Nevada, and Hannah Robb, Orem, Utah; great grandchildren, Cole Osmond, Ayla Penkoff, (Calgary)Easton and Harper Drescher, (Medicine Hat). Alice was predeceased by her parents, her brother John Burdette Sharpe and sister Mary Sharpe.
Alice’s family wants to extend a huge thank you to The Carmel Hospice at St. Joeseph’s Home in Medicine Hat. The care and attention to all of Alice’s needs and the nurturing shown towards the family were exceptional. They made mom’s final days so comfortable for all of us.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at a visitation held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Calgary First Church of the Nazarene, 65 Richard Way SW, Calgary on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Calgary First Church of the Nazarene in honor of Alice.
Although we are confident she is now happy in Heaven, she loved her life on Earth and formed some rich relationships. She will be extremely missed by her family and friends.
