My time spent with your family is something I often think about. Some of my best childhood memories are of the house on the park, hanging out at your house. Occasionally having dinner at home and then heading over to the olmsteds to be just in time for dinner, always welcome. Memories of your dad at the UofC and hearing about him telling stores about us in his classes is hilarious. He was a great man and I had alot of respect for him.

Tony, Julie, Sam and family - We are thinking of you and sending our deepest sympathies and love.  Although I have never met your dad Tony, he sounded like a great character which came through in your stories.  Take good care, Cherie, Deanne, Tate and Brynn

Noreen, Tony, Pat and family, I was both surprised and sorry to hear of Al's passing. I am so grateful for the role Al played in Michael's life.  From the first moment that Tony and Michael became friends, both of you opened your home to him, embracing, educating, challenging and broadening his perspective of the world.  I can also personally attest to the fact that Al's sociology classes were enlightening and really funny, due to the stories he brought from home. He made sociology fun. He was a good man.  My thoughts are with all of you during this difficult time, if there is anything I can help with, please let me know.

We are so sorry to hear about your dad Tony.  Our deepest sympathies to your family, you are all in our thoughts.

Susy and I were very sad to hear about the demise of Al. He joined the Department of Sociology and Anthropology in 1967 after i joined the Dept. in 1966. He was most friendly and I very much enjoyed having a chat with him. He always told of his life in Saskatchewan before he cam to Calgary. In the Department , he stayed clear of controversies and earned the respect of his colleagues. He was an undergraduate adviser and was well regarded by students. Susy and I have met Noreen and Al socially many times. We wish to extend our heart felt condolences to Noreen and family members.

I was very sorry to hear the sad news about Al. His down-to-earth approach and sense of humour were refreshing in the Department. My condolences to the family.

Susy and I are very sad to hear about the demise of Al Olmsted. He was a most friendly colleague. I always remember going to his office for a friendly chat. He also acted as a student adviser who could communicate with ease and was most helpful. He joined the Department of Sociology and Anthropology after I joined the Department. Susy and I like to extend our heart felt condolences to his family.

My deepest condolences. I will always remember Al as a pioneer contributor to the serious leisure literature on  hobbyists.

I remember Al with great fondness. We spent more than a few hours talking about ideas in his 8th floor office. He put in a memorable performance in a conference Shelly Goldenberg and I organized in the 1980s. He was funny, critical, and relevant. He'll be missed.

My sincere condolences to Noreen and the family. It is with great sadness that I learnt of Al's passing. In the mid-1990s, Al was my undergraduate thesis advisor at the UofC. I credit Al with influencing me to continue into graduate studies and for introducing me to the study of community, which has been the focus of my academic career. I fondly recall the many hours that I spent with Al in his office, where more often than not the discussion would turn to stories of his sons. It is with great appreciation that I reflect on the gift of "community" that Al bestowed upon me. I try and emulate the sincere concern and interest he took in his students, I speak on their behalf in thanking Al for his kindness and for being such a good model.

Noreen, Patrick, Tony - Words cannot express our shock and grief over your loss.  We remember so many good times with you.  Al was always laughing and joking, adding a lot to our many bridge games and other little adventures.  We came to know you as a great family, first at 704 28th Avenue NW.  Our sincere sympathies and love are extended to your families.

My condolences to the family.  I often look back to the vitality of the Department when Al was my colleague and the stimulating times we had together- before we lost so many positions.  I feel bad that I lost touch with him since his retirement.

Noreen:  I was just informed that Al died this past week.  My condolences and we shall miss him.  His intellect and wit go unchallenged.  My introduction to the "hot stove league" was from Al and I shall never forget his kindness when I was in need.  Jim and Carol Frideres

As you know, Al and I held offices near each other for many years, and often had extensive discussions on a broad range of subjects, a circumstance that I missed a great deal after our retirements.
