An avid collector of baseball caps, a lechon connoisseur, a man with an insatiable appetite for travel and adventure; a friend, brother, grandfather, father and husband. Bernie Guevara, a man of few words but significant action, passed away on September 14th, 2019 at the age of 61 years.
As a young man, Bernie would jog along the Marikina River, contemplating what life would have in store for him. His adolescence was met with numerous challenges, and he realized that a better life could be possible if he worked hard in his studies while also caring for his family.
As a newly graduated Mechanical Engineer from National University, he spent his first two years teaching physics and trigonometry. He went on to work for Atlantic Gulf & Pacific (AG&P) as a field engineer and during that time he would meet the love of his life.
Furthering his career, he took positions as a lead pipe-fitter, piping designer, quality control inspector, and piping design supervisor with Fluor. Over the span of 35 years, work would take him to places such as Kuwait, Beijing, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, South Carolina, Texas, Newfoundland and California. However, a fateful opportunity would guide the Guevara family to their home in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
In an effort to share the world and its wonders to his family, Bernie would take them on many vacations including; a road trip through the western United States in the iconic silver Honda Odyssey with “optional” air conditioning, traversing through Europe via public transit only, a bucket-list crossing adventure to the top of Machu Pichu, and a trip to the holy land with his wife to renew his vows.
Amongst other things, Bernie was a man of quiet faith. In times of trouble, Bernie’s faith would present itself through his selfless actions, kind demeanor and unwavering patience. His friendly smile, sarcastic wit, and signature mustache will be missed dearly by those who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Mary, his children and their partners Bernard and Katrina; Adrian and Sandra; Lawrence, Marie Joy and extended family in Marikina; two sisters Rhoda, and Carmela.
Prayer Service will be held at SOUTH CALGARY FUNERAL CENTRE, 12700 Macleod Trail South (at Lake Fraser Gate), on Friday, September 20, 2019 at 6:00 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be held at St. Bonaventure Parish, (1600 Acadia Dr SE), on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 11:00 a.m.
