Betty Nussbaumer passed away peacefully on Monday, April 20, 2026 at the age of 97 years. Betty was born on a train en route to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She grew up in Bladworth Saskatchewan and then in Saskatoon. After a fire razed the family business and their home above, they moved to Saskatoon, where Betty attended high school, and post secondary education. While in Saskatoon, Betty continued her piano lessons and achieved a level of grade 8. She met her first husband, Alexander (Al) Lipton, at a dance. They were married in 1949 in Winnipeg. They moved to Regina, where Al worked for his father in the family jewellery business. Betty and Al became involved in the Regina Jewish community with Betty very involved in Haddasah and other charity organizations.
Betty enjoyed life with her friends in Regina, who were all bringing up young families. Betty had four children that she adored and took to many events. Betty and Al became avid campers and took the family for many camping trips. They moved the family to Calgary in 1968, when Al got a job there in the petroleum industry. Betty got involved with the Jewish community in Calgary, as well as working various positions in the food industry. Betty loved to travel, especially to Hawaii. Al and she went there twice, along with many road trips throughout western Canada, visiting family and friends alike. Betty’s life long friend (long lost sister) Magda and her husband Moe were often joining for trips to Banff and Radium, BC.
Al was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and passed away in 1996. Betty had more love to give, and felt life must go on, so she took a chance and put a personal ad in the paper, soon meeting Ed Nussbaumer, after a few other dates. Ed was a widower and had much the same feelings towards life as Betty. Soon they realized they were in love. They married in February of 1999. And both could not have been happier! Much as before Ed & Betty took many road trips to visit family and friends. As well as trips to Hawaii! Betty was doating on her grandchildren, both from her side of the family, and Ed's side. Many happy times were celebrated with Betty and Ed. Especially June/July birthday celebrations.
Ed became ill and passed away in 2013.
Betty is survived by her children; Matthew of Creston, BC, Myra (Clare) of Victoria, BC, Ruth of Vancouver, BC and Mark of Calgary, AB, and granddaughters; Heather of Vancouver, Kathleen (Ryan) of Richmond. Ed's son; Rod of Maple Ridge, BC, Ed's daughter; Patti (Jeff) of Irricana AB, and grandchildren; Kirk (Andrea), Amy and Peter.
Betty was always upbeat and charitable to many people and organizations. She was a kind soul that always wanted to assist others. She always had a sparkle and twinkle in her eye. Making sure to look on the bright side of life. Never one to shy away from the hard things that needed to be done. One of Betty’s great loves was playing Maj Jong with her close friends, gambling pennies, nickels and dimes.
Betty's family would like to thank the staff and doctor's at Agecare Midnapore/Shawnee for their care and comfort.
A Celebration of Life will be held, Monday, May 4, 2026, 11am at the South Calgary Funeral Center. Internment to follow, at Mountain View Memorial Gardens.
