Dear Sue and Family.  I just learned yesterday of Al's passing.  I first met Al in the early days of P. H. Mud and became Al's transportation expert and good friend.  I always kidded him about that green Crown Victoria he had with the pink ski racks.  Many great memories of Al and I am sorry we didn't keep in closer contact since we moved to Australia.  All the best wishes in the future.

My Dearest Sue & family, Last night I learned of the passing of my friend (pal), your husband and father, I am deeply saddened at the loss of such a person. Please accept my belated condolences. I loved him like a brother and he was always there for me, over the many years, as a friend, a mentor and an employer. I will remember him in my prayers.

We were so sorry to learn of your recent loss.

We remember Al as a hospitable, kind, and jovial man whether it was at family reunions or as a guest in his home.

Jim and I were so sad to hear of Al's passing.  Our children spent many hours playing together and the four of us had many fun evenings.  Until Jim retired he ran into Al often downtown .  We send our love and prayers to all of you.

I miss a wonderful son-in-law----and his auto trips out to visit Gramma Smithe--and family in Vancouver .
And our great Scrabble games---How could I ever win a 
Game with Alroy !!---But once in a while I caught him up---But not very often!!   How I will miss those good games !!

Tina and I were deeply saddened to hear the passing of Al. I was very much privileged to work with him and share a lot of memorable moments. Al will be greatly missed by us all. Please accept our heart felt condolences.

I had the pleasure of visiting with Al at Jen & Jay's wedding in September and was privileged to be in his company, exchange some wonderful conversation, and listen to his heartfelt tribute to Jen.  How fortunate that he was able to walk Jen up to the altar.  I now know how special he was and he'll be greatly missed by his family and all those who knew him. It was just brought to our attention today of the passing of Al recently. We have many fond memories of Al as we all were living on Dalcastle & raising our kids. Al was in fact the 1st South African we knew & we loved his accent. We share your heartache & loss. We're sorry we missed his celebration of life which I'm sure it was - he was a class act!

Al  I hope you have a great journey to the next venture, i remember many days sitting across from you at the office, learning all about your family, your mud business and a general education you gave me. You always had time to visit, to offer help to everyone, a generous person. Al I remeber many days at the Rim Rock in the lounge solving all the worlds problems, now that you have God's ear let him know how you can help get it all fixed for us. Sorry to hear about your Dad's passing , i loved hanging around with all you guys, i think at one time or another each of you worked in our office . My condolences to you Susan and family. I also met Al at the Western Canadian fitness club a few years ago. Along with Brian and Ian I would get my daily updates on the rugby scene. Occasionally, this would be followed up with more detailed conversations over lunch. Al always met you with a smile and a laugh, and had this "zest" for life.

Al had many friends worldwide, a good testament to the man. He will be missed.

Sincere condolences Sue, to you and the family. After our few hundred squash matches, on Mondays when we were both in the same location, over the past 20 odd years, I consider Al to have been a great friend. Recovering in the steam was filled with many memorable discussions. RIP Pal.

We cannot begin to imagine how hard these past few days have been for all of you. We grieve with you for the loss of a husband, father, grandfather and friend. Al was a bright and wonderful person that touched everyone that had the pleasure of knowing him. Our thoughts and hearts will continue to be with you all in the weeks and months ahead.

I was sad to hear of Al's passing. I met Al when he was a young man checking mud on wells in alberta and he was a friend for many years. I have fond memories of many breakfasts at the norcen building and al's driving out to participate in our ice fishing capers in southern alberta usually followed by a round or two of liars dice at the camp. we always had a good time and a lot of laughs. I will always have fond memories of al.

It is only in the last few years that I had the privilege to meet and get to know Al. We met at Canadian Place Fitness Centre and soon realized we shared a common love and passion for "the men in the green jerseys". While Al was a devout S. Agrican rugby supporter, I was an Ireland fan. We loved to share rugby stories, normally with Ian Cathery and Daryl MacLeod. It was always a pleasure to  be with Al and it was easy to understand how he had developed so many friendships all over the world. When we met for lunch recently, it certainly was a shock to see the change in Al. Al knew he was heading downhill...but that determined, he set about to make his goodbyes. Even, calm, courageous and dignified. It was the stamp of purest character. Only a truly good man could have faced that challenge with such steady ease and perfect courtesy. It was an honour to know Al and to celebrate a life well lived. I will certainly cherish the memories forever.

"Hey Pal", we'll miss you more than you will ever know.  I speak on behalf of all the squash guys including Al B, Bob P, Don B and Todd B when I say life won't be the same on or off the court.  You were a wonderful human being.  Our deepest condolences go out to Al's wife Sue and beautiful children and their families.  There was never a time Al didn't mention his family.  Al Hattingh was a man of character, humour, and passion we loved to call our friend.  May our pal rest in peace and the angels look after him.

On behalf of all the staff and members of Fifth Avenue Club, I want to extend condolences. Al was a founding member of the club and played hundreds, if not thousands, games of squash here. His was a life well lived!

Such a positive spirit and friendly person. It's not surprising to see such an outpouring over this loss.

"Hey Pal" that's how he always answered the phone when I ran mud for him, well "Hey Pal" I will miss you.

My condolences to Al's family on his passing.  I conducted business with Al for many years, but it was always so much more than business.  Al became a good friend who was always interested in sharing his life experiences and news of his family.  Al enjoyed life, and it showed!

I got to know "Big Al" at the 5th Avenue Club and saw him almost every morning for many, many years.  His good humour, booming laugh and love of life and his family were inspiring and helped me to start each day in a good mood.  I used to really enjoy his stories of all the fun that he had at the rugby world cups where he would be travelling all over so that he could follow his South African team.  My condolences to the family. He will be missed by all who knew him.

He told many stories some of them were jokes and some were true experiences he had along the way. He will be missed by all of his buddies on the "Old Boys Spring Golf Tour" - here is a Guinness to you my friend!
