Clifford was born in Saskatchewan in 1934 and was raised in a rural setting in the Kennell district in what was a mostly German-speaking community. He attended one of the infamous prairie 'one-room schoolhouses' remaining at that time. As a young boy, he enjoyed helping his father run the family-owned Valley Brook Service Station. Clifford always joked that he worked in the oil industry for most of his life. Later, the family moved to Regina, where Clifford attended Balfour Tech High School. After graduating with honours, Clifford pursued work in the oil industry at Canadian Devonian Petroleums. It was here where he met his future wife, Marjorie. Clifford’s work took him to Calgary, where he proposed to Marjorie. They were married in Regina in 1962 and together raised two daughters Corrine and Denise.
Clifford worked as a landman in the oil industry and started out in the 'old school' tradition of that profession: travelling throughout Alberta to meet with the farmers and ranchers of this Province to sign up land leases. He eventually became head of the Land Department at Bow Valley Industries. He left Bow Valley in the early '70's to lead a consortium of investors that held land leases in the McKenzie Delta of the Canadian Arctic. He spent much of his time in the 1970's and '80's travelling back and forth to both the Arctic and Ottawa seeking approval to drill. He also started his own successful land consulting company at this time, and through that had many interesting opportunities to travel throughout Canada, the US and some of the Caribbean. Cliff kept an office in downtown Calgary until he was 85 years old. He could regularly be seen at lunch hours at the Calgary Petroleum Club.
Clifford was a devoted Lutheran and spent much of his time volunteering at Highwood Lutheran Church and with various other Christian organizations over the years. He had a deep faith in God and was a devoted husband of 64 years. He was also a wonderful father and grandfather. Those who knew him said what a kind, respectful gentleman and friend he was.
Clifford was predeceased by his mother Hildagard, father Karl and stepmother Theresa, along with sisters and brothers-in-law, Doreen (Ed) Shirley (Wally), Marlene, Allan and Diane.
He is survived by his loving wife Marjorie, daughters Corrine (Murray) and Denise (Bruce), along with grandchildren Lachlan, Lance, Erika and Kristen. He is also survived by sisters Barbara, Annette (Dale), and brother Murray (Karen), along with sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and numerous nephews and nieces.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the dedicated staff at the Foothills Hospital and Agape Hospice for their care and compassion during Clifford’s final days.
A Funeral Service will be held at Foothills Lutheran Church, 3104 34 Ave N.W., Calgary on Friday, March 6, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor David Bode officiating. Interment to follow at Queen's Park Cemetery. For those who would like to attend virtually, the service will be live streamed: www.youtube.com/@foothillslutheranchurch9020/streams
In lieu of flowers, if family and friends so desire, a memorial donation in Cliff’s honour may be made to Agape Hospice in Calgary.
