It has been 10 years since since the sudden passing of Don.I met Don in high school and went to St Mary’s University with Don.Don was a good friend with a kind heart and great sense of humour.Don was happy go lucky however he brought laughter where ever he went.The tributes to Don by students and friends are very fitting.I think of him often.

Mr. Galloway,

You were truly my favorite teacher in all of junior high.  Your enthusiasm for Social Studies made me love history and the fact that you were a regular guy with moods, good and bad, with jokes, with HUMANITY, that a lot of teacher's don't show - made all of us aware that teacher's were people, capable of mistakes of judgment just like the rest of us, but EDUCATED and matured.  You made us want to grow up for the first time, and for me you made me want to be a teacher.  I'm sure that you inspired many, many others as well.  You are loved, admired, and you will be forever missed and remembered.  Thank you for being part of my life story.

You were a wonderful person and teacher. I often think of you and remember the lessons you taught me both inside the classroom and out. I will cherish the visits we were able to have together years later when you and your wife would visit the Keg.

Mr. Don Galloway was one of my favorite teachers in junior high.  He made me feel like my opinion mattered and treated me and everyone else with respect and kindness.  He had a profound affect on how I treat people today; with honesty, caring and fairness.  Reading all of these tributes bring back so many memories and laughter to me.  Please take  comfort in knowing that your husband's legacy will live on in the memories of generations of students who knew and loved Don.

Mary, we have only today learned of your loss of Don.  We can't tell you how terribly sorry we are.  You are foremost in our minds and hearts.  It is obvious Don was deeply loved and respected by all who knew him.

I fondly recall Mr. Galloway teaching Social Studies in Gleichen 30 years ago.  He affected a great number of people, including myself, and he will continue to influence the world through the students he taught and inspired.  I was saddened to hear of his passing.  I will always remember his passion, enthusiasm and the great many metre sticks he broke trying to make sure we remembered important dates.

Don I was at the Elks yesterday.  What a wonderful gathering of the hundreds of persons who loved you and Mary.  Thanks for being such a great friend and colleague.  You are missed in so many many lives. You will not be forgotten.

Mr Galloway was a remarkable teacher.  He truly taught us much more than Social Studies.  He was a teacher that I always enjoyed going back and visiting.  I am saddened by the fact that I can no longer run in to him.  He left a positive mark on many of our lives and will always be remembered.

I am shocked and saddened to hear of Don's passing. We were classmates at Prince Andrew High in N.S. Don-Don, as we called him was incredibly funny and insightful. My first year teaching in '63 was with his mother, Marion. I still teach in the Vancouver area, and would have enjoyed sharing anecdotes with him.

I had the privilege of knowing Don Galloway for over 30 years as a friend and colleague. His infectious sense of humour will be missed by all of us who knew him. Trying to match wits with Don was like taking on Patton or Rommel with a popgun, he was a master. I remember many years ago Don saying that he became a teacher so he wouldn’t have to get a real job. Teaching was never a job for him it was a mission and a passion to which he was totally dedicated. Don Galloway was truly one of the “ Good Guys” I’ll miss you buddy.

It is with shock and disbelief that we send you our deep and sincere condolences.  Don left us so suddenly.

We are in Vancouver and have been here since December 30th.  We won't be returning until January 9th  so will miss the gathering at the Elks regrettably.  We will speak to you on our return.

This much we know: Don loved you dearly and spoke of you lovingly and often.  We will always remember his cheerfulness, laughter, wit and stories from his career as a teacher that left us all in stitches.  He will not be forgottenand will remain indelibly in our hearts.

I remember your class as being interesting and fun. I remember your keen sense of humour. As I reflect back on those days (1992 to 1995) I think I was fortunate that you disciplined my misbehaving in class directly instead of sending me to Mr. Browns office.

I've grown up now and am no longer misbehaving. I've married a teacher and now I hear about her misbehaving students often around the supper table. I have a son now too and he is teaching me how to be father and is helping me to learn patience.

I'm sorry that I was such a brat back then.

Also, I want you to know that time that somebody wrapped your car in rolls of toilet paper - I had nothing to do with that incident. But I remember you took it like a champ! If you were upset about that you didn't show it.

I remember a lot of really great classes with you. You are an effective educator and an amazing person. I'm really happy that I was privileged to be one of your students.

My favorite memory of Mr. Galloway was when the Flames won the cup in the 80's and Mr Galloway dressed up and danced through the hallways with music blasting on the PA system.

I had the privilege of having Mr. Galloway teach me Grade 8 Social Studies.  It wasn't my favorite subject but he had a way of engaging his students through humour and stories that we could relate to which made the class one I looked forward to attending.  I remember one day when he was speaking near the front of the room and a tack suddenly fell off the map and almost landed on him.  He jumped back and started yellig, "A-tack, a-tack".  He had us all laughing in stitches.  I'm sure he had a significant impact on all of his students and I believe inspired many to pursue teaching careers themselves.  My condolences to his family and friends.

He was a great teacher, kept us in line back in the day. very early 80's. He had a way of getting your attention and making the day seem more interesting and fun. I only knew him a short time, but he was the kind of person one never forgets.

Mr. Galloway he made us all laugh and always made sure we tried our best and nothing else was acceptable. He coached our volleyball team that won South Central Zones and I'm pretty sure he had a lot less hair when the season was over! 
Even as we went into high school he remained a hugh part of our lives so much so that at our grad he was our guest speaker and he gave the best speech EVER!! 
We will never forget his love of life and his great sense of humour. Thank you for being such a great influence in my life and making me a better person. You will be missed!

Mr. Galloway was a very rare find, a teacher that cared and went the extra mile. I was so blessed to have him as a teacher. R.I.P to a true angel.

It was with great sadness that I heard of Mr. Galloway's passing. He taught me in grade 8 for Social Studies. He truly was a great inspiration to others with his wit and humour. People come and go in our lives. Sometimes they are there for a long time, sometimes only for a moment in time.  Mr. Galloway was my teacher from grade 7-9 and I didn't realize until I was an adult how much his support and character would affect my life. I have always wanted to thank him for giving me a voice and making me feel like my opinions mattered. I hope he knew how much he meant to the students whose lives he touched.

There was an empty chair at the curling arena this morning - a sign of how much Don will be missed.

Mr. Galloway is the man that scared me into playing volleyball and taught me not to cry every time I made a mistake, these are two gifts I'm still grateful for. He had a big bark and an even bigger heart, there's no end to the number of lives he made better by being present in them. Thanks Mr. Galloway for believing in all of us.

i remember having Mr.Galloway as a grade 8 teacher. I used to get a kick out of all his stories that he told. He was a great teacher and made u realize if you put ur mind to something you could do anything!!

Mr. Galloway was one of the best teachers, if not the best. He will always be remembered and in our hearts forever. My condolences go out to his family and friends.

After being out of school for 20 + years, some "shool memories" may be a bit "fuzzy" ...  not the Mr. Galloway memories ...  an amazing, honest, down to earth person who had a huge impact on all those he taught.  He will not be forgotten, and I only hope that one day my daughter will have a special teacher that reaches out and connects to students in regards to academics and life the way this man did. My condolences to the family of Mr. Galloway. He was a great teacher and also a very funny teacher. I still remember to this day the time he caught me chewing gum in grade 8 and to punish me I had to write a 2 page essay on gum. I think of this often when I chew gum. You will be greatly missed. I was fortunate to have Mr. Galloway as my home room, math and social teacher for grade 8 and 9. What a great two years those were! When I heard the news there were so many memories that came rushing back, I don't even know were to start but by saying thank you.
I am now teaching and can only hope to inspire as many students as you did.

Mr. Galloway always made his classes enjoyable and fun! You always left his room with a smile, a good laugh, or just feeling more positive! He was a funny man who would even discipline with humor, such as pulling a toy out of the bottom drawer in his filing cabinet at the back of the room if you were being immature ( I got the My Little Pony!)Or proudly announcing that, "When you come to work with the tie on and your name on the outside of the door, then it is your rules. Until then, it I me who is wearing the tie with my name on the door, so it is my rules!"
 Mr. Galloway was a great man and an amazing teacher! Rest in Peace.

Mary, my sincere condolences.  Don was by far one of the greatest educators one could imagine, and his impact on his students was so very much more than what any curriculum could ever require.  After almost 20 years, I can still very easily recall many of the lessons he taught me, though few had anything to do with school subjects.  His enthusiasm, wit, and unfaltering dedication to the lives he touched cannot be overstated, and he will be greatly missed.

Mr. Galloway had such an amazing way of touching such a large amout of people in so many different ways - school, athletics, councilling and the list goes on. He will be truly missed.

Mr. Galloway was one of a kind. We are all very fortunate to have had him in our lives. He was so important to us he was our guest speaker at our grade 12 graduation...a highlight of the night.

I can only hope that my own kids will have a teacher this special that they will remember and talk about 20+ years later.

Mr. Galloway always made class fun and enjoyable for his students! Every class left you with a smile, a good laugh, or just feeling more positive! Mr. Galloway was my Grade 8 teacher and to this day I still remember him as a teacher that seemed to care about his students. Everyday he always had a smile on his face and a new chalenge for his students. Hard to believe was 25 years ago. What a time that was...

Mr. Galloway was my Grade 3 teacher in Gleichen in 1980 and his enthusiasm and energy was contagious in the classroom.  One simple comment of praise  during math studies sticks with me and opened my mind to the fun of the subject and my future studies.  My condolences on your loss.

The teaching world lost one of the greats this week. Mr. Galloway will be greatly missed by his former students. Whether we were learning about current events or how hard life would be once we moved on in life he found a way to make it interesting and fun. He wasn't only a teacher but a friend, you always knew you could go to him with a problem or concern and he would listen to you 
and treat you with respect. Not only did I have the pleasure of being taught by a wonderful dedicated teacher, my mother had the pleasure of working with him. In her words he always brought a bit of sunshine into his classes and was a kind compassionate teacher. Our deepest symathy goes out to his family.

Mr. Galloway was a great teacher and basketball coach! I was lucky enough to have him as a teacher from Grade 5 to Grade 9 and as a coach throughout those years as well. He was always funny and had excellent aim when throwing chalk as someone who wasn't paying attention. We all loved the stool at the front of the class that he would sit on as he taught, so when we asked him to speak at our graduation, we bought him a new stool!

Mr. Galloway, you were definately my favorite teacher, and I know you made a huge impact in the lives of your students. You will be missed!

He was my teacher and my volleyball coach.. I remember him asking me why i played so good in practice and slacked off in the games .. of course brought up my vball star of a sis.. and proceeded to tell me i had it in me ... He created a special memory I'll never forget..

I had the pleasure of being one of Don's first students in Gleichen Elementary... and have heard only great things about his teaching, as well as the respect and admiration from his students over 20+ years. It was also great to see Don at different arena's watching the kids of his former students play hockey. An all around great person!! RIP Don... You will be missed by many.

I was sad to hear the news of Mr. Galloway's passing.  He was my teacher in Jr. High School.  I remember him being a straight talker and a teacher who loved to joke around! But you could always tell he really cared about you and how you did in his class.  He will be missed.  My condolences for your loss.

It is always with strange sorrow when we must say good bye to loved ones.  Though it has been many years since Mr. Galloway and I crossed paths, I will never forget his infectious laugh and indeliable sense of humor.

Thank you, Mr. Galloway for living your life as fully as you could and teaching others to do the same.

A reflection of our school years refers to Mr.Galloway, a favorite by generations of students. He truly made a difference to so many of us, he will be missed.

Mr. Galloway taught me in several classes from grade 5 to grade 7 if I recall correctly.  He had a lot of wit and that joking type nature about him, which brought about that really comfortable teacher/student relationship.  The aspect I most remember about Mr. Galloway, was how he described how difficult life was to live on your own...to pay utility bills, pay rent or mortgages, car payments, etc., so that afternoon, I went home all pumped about living at home forever and ever.  I think that was one of the best things I could have told my mamma at the time!!  Thank you Mr. Galloway!!  You will be dearly missed by all!!

Mr. Galloway touched the hearts and lives of not only our children but hundreds of kids he taught in Strathmore. He was one of those teachers that gave his students a sense of themselves, enjoyed his job and took pride in his ability to shape our childrens futures. He will be missed.

My condolences for your lost. He was an amazing teacher and inspired a lot of people.

A wonderful guy with a great sense of humour. He will be remembered for his teaching style and obvious love of the students.

Mr.Galloway although he may not gave himself this acknowledgement, was a mentor and favorite educator to almost everyone I know who had him for a teacher. That was a pleasure and a fear in some cases..not because he was scary but because he was tough,honest, and fair. I remember many things about him this last 24 hours and was a great time to reflect back and think of the things taught not just of Social Studies and Geography but of life and wit. 

His candid speech about the "rebels" that chewed gum in his class followed by grand gestures and body movements...something almost out of a movie and it made you laugh. The way that he had a knack for making a bunch of 13-14 year olds feel like they mattered and their opinion had worth in this world. The all around common man that he was that in this world and in my experience is the furthest thing from common.

This leads me now to the final question on your final exam every year I had him or I should say had the honor of having him for a teacher. It went something like this as I remember.

The reason Mr.Galloway is the greatest social teacher in the world is....

A.Because he is the most intelligent man in the world
B.He is a amazing teacher that is full of charm and wit
C.He can make even the most difficult things seem so easy due to his genius
D. All of the above( THIS IS THE RIGHT ANSWER)
