It is with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Donald Poon, a lifelong Calgarian, on February 3, 2025, at the age of 83 years.
Born on May 5, 1941, Donald’s life was intricately woven into the fabric of Calgary, from his family's beloved Linda Mae’s Lotus Gardens Restaurant - a cherished community gathering spot - to his years working at Eaton’s and Sears. He believed in community, and the simple joys of life, whether that was sharing a meal with family or enjoying a quiet morning on the Bow River with a fishing rod in hand.
For those who knew him, Donald was a man of quiet dedication, often spending countless hours by the Bow River. It was here that he found peace, patience, and the thrill of the perfect catch—shared with his fishing companion, Phil Kominos, and many family members, creating lasting memories on the water.
Donald is survived by his daughter Tina Buckthorp, son Christopher Buckthorp (Josephine, Australia), sisters Georgina Lee (George), Gloria Tak, and Linda Mae Dempsey, brother David Poon (Jan), and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, Chong Him and Arline Poon, and his brothers Henry and Robert Poon.
His final years were spent at Wai Kwan Manor, where he remained strong in spirit. Though he has left us, Donald’s legacy will endure in the hearts of those who loved him—in the steadiness around family dinner tables, in the stories told by the riverbank, and in the quiet moments of reflection that remind us of his spirit.
In lieu of a formal service, a family gathering will be held in March to celebrate his life and legacy.
