Eddie Scharfenberg, husband to Pat, father to Duane (Laurel), Deana (Dwayne) and Donald (Lana), and grandfather to Nicholas, Joel, Emma, Justin, and Kyla, passed away at the AgeCare Beverly Centre on May 2, 2017.
Eddie was the youngest child of Hugo and Alma Scharfenberg, born at home near Ellerslie, Alberta, on December 25, 1933. Eddie was part of very large family with many brothers and sisters. They all had a special place in his heart. After Eddie left high school he spent some time working on the oil rigs before finding employment with Canada Packers, where he worked until 1980.
He met Pat, his wife of almost 60 years, at Canada Packers; they were married on January 29, 1955 where he was welcomed by the Cowan family, and had many happy times at the family farm. Their married life was spread over the four western provinces, living in Edmonton, Nelson, Winnipeg, Moose Jaw, and finally settling in Calgary. Eddie amassed many long-time friends while working for Canada Packers, and then when he left the meat business and took on the position of Real Estate Agent with AE LePage in 1980. Eddie retired from Royal LePage in August 2012 at the age of 78. Eddie had a love for horse races, playing the lotto, going to the casino, watching and betting on hockey and football games, and enjoying a drink or two any chance he could get. His boisterous personality is what drew people to him and led to many lifelong friendships. Thank you to our dad`s many friends and family that continued to spend time with him after he moved to the AgeCare Glenmore Centre. Your friendships are what enabled him to settle into his life there.
At Eddie`s request, his ashes will be spread with Pat`s at the Cowan family farm.
A Remembrance Open House in his honour will be held on Sunday, June 25, 2017, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Parkland Community Hall, (505 Parkvalley Road SE, Calgary, AB).
The family would like to thank the staff at AgeCare Glenmore Centre for the care they provided to our dad for the almost four years he resided there.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations being made in Eddie’s memory directly to the Kerby Fund Development, (1133 7 Avenue SW, Calgary, AB T2P 1B2).
