March 26, 1931 – June 28, 2011
Eileen went to be with her Lord and Saviour at age 80, after a brief but hard battle with leukemia. She was born in Sexsmith, AB to Edwin and Gyro Torgerson and raised on the farm at LaGlace. After high school she went to Grande Prairie Business College. She and her sister, Gladys, then attended Berean Bible College in Calgary. Eileen’s secretarial and book keeping career involved banking, lawyers, steel manufacturers, Alberta Highways, Royal Trust Real Estate and freelancing for realtors. In retirement, Eileen’s church and community spirit continued with 19 years of enumeration, census and sitting at polls for all three levels of government. Eileen was a true Albertan at heart but loved to travel by RV to many states in the USA and Mexico, spending several winters “Down South” and 3 trips to the Yukon and Alaska. She flew to Hawaii, Cuba, Great Britain, Dominican Republic and several resort spots in Mexico. She took cruises, enjoying all ports along the way, in the Caribbean, Alaska and through the Panama Canal. Eileen was an avid reader, loved backpacking and hiking in the Canadian Rockies and attending family functions and reunions. She is survived and terribly missed by Maurice, her loving husband of over 53 years, her daughter Sheila (Ken) McKeating, her son David, dear sister Gladys (Ivar) Botnen, brother in law Robert Simmons, nieces and nephews Anita (John) Fisher, Sandra Botnen, Linda Trapp, Karen (Curt) Geisbrecht, Lorne (Laurel) Simmons, Patty McCord, Colleen (Steve) Zimick, and Donald (Karla) McCord. Other survivors are aunt, Sonja Torgerson, cousins in Canada, USA and Norway and many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. Her parents Edwin and Gyro, parents in law Harry and Alice, niece Linda Botnen, sister in law Alice Simmons, sister in law Patricia McCord (nee Simmons) and brother in law Roy Alton McCord, predeceased Eileen. Special thanks to Tom Baker Cancer Centre, Foothills Emergency and Unit 57 staff. Private family viewing and burial, followed by a Celebration of Life at Brentview Baptist Church, 3512 Charleswood Drive N.W., Calgary on Monday, July 11, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre 1331 – 29 Street N.W.
