Eva Kinnear of Calgary AB, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 12, 2024, at the age of 90 years. She was born in Drumheller, AB, to Eula and Ed MacDonald. Her family relocated to Edmonton, AB in her high school years which is where she met her husband of 52 years, Roy Kinnear. Eva and Roy were married in 1952, and had four children before moving to Calgary in 1972. Eva returned to school as an adult and obtained her CMA professional accounting designation in 1977. She subsequently worked as a professional accountant in both paid and volunteer capacities before retiring in 2012.
Eva was also a talented seamstress. In addition to sewing she knitted, crocheted, macraméd, painted and documented her family’s lives with her photographs and scrapbooks. She enjoyed being physically active and was an avid hiker for well over 30 years with her women’s “Thursday group”. She golfed, skied, snowshoed, bowled, and was an accomplished swimmer with both lifeguard and instructor status. Eva loved playing cards with both family and friends, particularly kitchen bridge and Shanghai.
With her husband Roy, she immersed herself in family genealogy. Their many years of research culminated in her self-published book “Hence We Came” which chronicled both her and Roy’s family histories as well as their lives together.
After Roy’s death in 2004, she continued to enjoy traveling and many recreational activities with her companion of 17 years, Bob.
Eva is survived by her four children, Valerie (Rik Smistad), Nancy, Jim (Diane) and Gregg (Sheri); seven grandsons, Erik and Andrew Smistad (Courtney), Michael, Alexander, and Christopher Kinnear, and Justin and Darren Kinnear; two great-grandsons, Hayden Kinnear and Theo Smistad; her sisters-in-law Adrianne Kinnear and Joan MacDonald, and numerous nephews and nieces.
