Mom was born in Gadacs, Hungary in 1925, and immigrated to Canada with her husband Filip in 1951 where they settled in the Lethbridge area. Mom and Dad built a good life for themselves and us children, from Monarch, to the farm at Park Lake and then finally with a move to Calgary for Mom.
If you knew Mom, then you know that she was a fiercely independent woman with a strong work ethic and spirit. She loved her family deeply, and derived great joy in being with them and cooking and baking for them. No one will ever forget her strudel, poppy seed cake, chicken paprikash, doughnuts, cabbage rolls and gumern salat. Her love for her family saw her travel to New Zealand, Texas, and back to Gadacs.
Then there was her garden - Mom was famous for her peppers and huge tomatoes, and never tired of working in the garden and marveling at how everything grew. She also did much handcraft - crocheted afghans, embroidery, petit pointe; she never let her hands be still. She did much and gave much, always with an open heart.
Mom was the “adopted grandmother” for her neighbors, and we thank you all for your many kindnesses; she loved this role and was always happy to visit with you over the fence. Buying a lottery ticket periodically was so much fun for Mom; she always believed she might win someday, and knew exactly how she would give the money to her family.
Faith was an important element of Mom’s life and sustained her through some very difficult times. Mom was predeceased by her parents, Eva and John Roos, her husband Filip, and her sister Elizabeth Tiede.
Mom is lovingly survived by her children Rosemarie (Robert), Marvin (Catherine) and John (Sandee); and her grandchildren Andrew (Olga), Christine (Rich), Alex (Laurel) and Kevin; and great grandchildren Michael, Anna, Harrison and Bennett.
We are grateful to the staff at Bethany Harvest Hills for their amazing and compassionate care.
A private service for family will be held on Thursday.
