It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Evelyn Anne Pigeon, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, on March 16, 2022, at the age of 83 years.
Evelyn is survived by her husband of 28 years, Doug Pigeon; her children Monica (Bill, Toronto), Sandra, Michael (Samantha, Kentucky), Krista (Reg); Doug's children Wayne (Rita), Brian (Margaret), Glen (Rhonda), as well as 20 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Evelyn was born in Winnipeg, but moved with her parents and three brothers to Calgary as a young child. It was here she was married and raised her four children. She worked for many years at Sears and Eaton's before retiring in 1993. In 1994 she began a new chapter with her new husband Doug Pigeon. The next 28 years and her zest for life took her on many adventures and new experiences. Together they traveled and trailered through almost every province in Canada, to Mexico, and many of the U.S. states, cruised to a number of destinations and visited friends and family in many provinces and states.
Family was extremely important to Evelyn. She cherished her family and welcomed all of Doug's family into her life. She took great pride and strides in hosting family events and included everyone. She made every effort to visit those that lived afar as often as she could. Above all, Evelyn wanted her family close, whenever and as often as possible, even if they lived in locations far from Calgary.
Evelyn touched so many lives and leaves behind a very large circle of friends that she met and made through the various clubs and groups she belonged to: hiking and cross-country skiing, Slo-Pitch, Good Sam Pioneers trailer club, Queens and Jacks square dancing, Bridge club, and round, line and traditional dancing. Evelyn was a long-time member of the Thorncliffe Greenview Seniors Group, serving as vice-president in the late 1990s, canvassing for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, and cooking for the bingo group. As a member of the Forest Lawn Seniors Group she was an exuberant participant in - and helped to run - the dances there. The joy she felt while dancing - waltz, foxtrot, square, round, and line - was evident in her face and whole demeanor. She loved the social aspect of these groups and activities and loved learning new things.
Evelyn had many passions that were near and dear to her heart. She was an amazing seamstress and later took on the challenge of quilting. Her finished products were incredibly detailed and intricate, and always perfect and beautiful. Her creativity was instilled from an early age, through sketching and drawing. She was an amazing cook and was always willing to try out new recipes on family and friends. According to Doug, she made the best grilled steak. Not many people are probably aware of her passion for history - ancient civilizations, the American Civil War, British history, and North American history in general.
Evelyn was a kind and beautiful soul. Her bright smile and positive energy would light up rooms. One cannot forget or ignore her stylishness, fashion sense, and how well-dressed she always was. Her youthful looks enhanced her stylishness. Her energy was amazing and it was incredible how she was game to try almost anything. We will all miss her easy going personality, her love for adventure, her penchant for silliness and being goofy at times, her convictions, and strength of character, and her passion and devotion to her family and friends. You loved, were loved, and will be missed.
"Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones. And when you have finished your daily task, go to sleep in peace ..."
- Victor Hugo
