Omi, as everyone lovingly called her, was born in Feistritz an der Gail, Karnten Austria, was the last survivor and the second youngest of six children. There she married Martin and they started their family. In 1953 she immigrated to Canada with Margith to join Dad in Canada. They settled in NW Calgary where Dad built their home and lived there for 51 years. A home where all the grandchildren and great grandchildren came together to celebrate every Easter and Christmas with all the Austrian traditions, where family, friends and visitors from Austria stayed, where she loved to bake, cook and feed everyone who came to visit, whether you were hungry or not.
Mom worked for over 30 years with the Hudson’s Bay Co. on the 6th floor cafeteria and made lifelong friendships. They built a family cabin, at Columbia Lake, BC where they spent summers and winters with friends and grandchildren; swimming, biking and skiing. Mom’s most favorite pass time was playing cards. She also loved to knit dishcloths and gave them away as fast as she could make them.
She also loved her yard and garden and even this fall she was out in her yard raking leaves and getting her yard ready for winter. She loved her neighbors, especially the kids and she would shout out to them from her balcony “I love you” and they would shout back – “We love you Omi.”
Mom and Dad went to Mass at St. Pius Church for over 50 years, where they saw their children and grandchildren marry and be baptized. Mass was her spiritual and social outlet– always having something to say to those who sat near her. Saturday will be her last mass there.
Omi left behind 2 daughters, Margith (Kevin) Smith, Ingrid (Jim Poapst) Druml; grandchildren Jennifer (Jake) King, Matthew (Marilyn) Smith, Joanna (Damir Silic) Poapst, James Poapst, and 6 great grandchildren, Michael, Simon and Jocelyn King, Benjamin and Emmersyn Smith, and Dominik Silic. She is also survived by her sisters in law, and numerous nieces and nephews in Austria. She was predeceased by her husband Martin.
