Born on February 25, 1956, in Hong Kong, Gordon lived a truly global life, growing up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and as an adult moving to Montreal, Quebec before settling in Calgary. It was there that he met his wife, Irene Chan. They were married in August 1999 and welcomed their son, Daniel Ching, in 2001.
Gordon began his career as a florist before transitioning into the finance industry, where he spent many years as a mortgage specialist with various banks. Gifted with numbers and financial insight, he became a trusted resource not only for clients but for family and friends who regularly sought his advice and over the course of his career, he built not only professional success but an extraordinary network of connections. He was charismatic and outgoing and was never afraid to strike up a conversation with anyone and it often seemed that he knew someone at nearly every company or restaurant he encountered.
Even while navigating serious illness, he formed meaningful connections with those around him including his pharmacists and doctors who remembered him by name and cared for him well beyond professional duty. His generosity was evident in the way he was always willing to refer friends to his professional network after retirement, to share opportunities while still being available as an informal resource for financial decisions.
In his later years, Gordon faced significant health challenges that affected his daily life. Despite enduring chronic illness and physical pain, his devotion to his family never wavered. Caring for his wife and son remained his highest priority with grocery shopping, cooking and planning and organizing family vacations.
As a devoted husband, he extended that same care and generosity to his extended family, looking after his mother-in-law and supporting his wife’s siblings without hesitation. Many family dinners and vacations were made more special because he insisted on bringing everyone together. He took great pride in providing for his family and in giving his wife the opportunity to see the world alongside him.
As a dedicated father, he encouraged his son to live fully, enrolling him in sports, supporting his interests and fostering a love of travel and adventure. When reflecting on his life, Gordon shared that his only regret was marrying late in life, as he wished he could have witnessed more milestones with his family. Still, he found peace knowing his wife was secure and surrounded by her family and that his son had grown into an independent adult with a fulfilling career, relationships and a rich life.
