Don passed away peacefully at home in Calgary suddenly following a massive stroke. Don was happily married for 57 years to his beloved and cherished wife and best friend, Dawn, who survives him, as well their children, Scott (Krista) and Traci (Mark Hougen). His grandchildren, Teagan and Paige, and Gillian and Graeme, and Sarah were a constant delight. Born is Kitchener Ontario, he was predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Lyla Meades but is also survived by his brother Lawrence “Larry “and his sons Jamie (Liane), Chris (Wendy) and Kent.
His education began in Toronto where he attended the University of Toronto and the UWO Business School (now Ivey) before moving to Calgary in 1966. There he had a successful career in the energy industry before retiring in 1998. In the 1970’s his volunteer activities included the Certified General Accountants Association-Prairie Region and the Calgary United Way.
By his own admission, an athlete of somewhat limited ability he enjoyed the Calgary Winter Club and Silver Springs Golf and Country Club where he participated in badminton and very actively in golf. His handicap never got to single digits but he did have two holes in one in 45 seasons of golf. In the 1970’s he also served a term as Treasurer of the golf club.
Dawn and Don became snowbirds in the 1990’s, spending as much time as possible in Lake Havasu, Arizona where they had a winter home for 25 years; it included new friendships, golf and swimming in their pool. They also had many delightful golf trips which (including South Africa and New Zealand), a number of vacations cruising in the Caribbean and a trip to Northern Italy followed by a Mediterranean cruise.
The family wish to thank Dr. Glenn Gould and Dr. Jeremy deBruyn for their tender care and wise counsel over the past many decades.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the Alberta Diabetes Foundation at https://www.albertadiabetesfoundation.com. At Don’s request there will not be a service at this time due to COVID-19, however a Life Celebration will be held at a later date when it’s safe to do so.
