Harold was born in Brantford, ON and spent a happy and adventurous childhood in his beloved city. He joined the RCMP on April 24, 1941 and volunteered for overseas service in WWII, but was stationed in Ontario before being transferred to Calgary and Banff. It was in Calgary that he met and married Carol Hicks on April 29, 1950 and Alberta became home. He was a devoted husband to Carol for over 64 years. Harold and Carol were stationed together throughout many rural southern Alberta towns including Medicine Hat, Hilda, Fort McLeod, Taber, Brooks, and Calgary. He retired from the RCMP in Calgary on January 4, 1967 with an exemplary service record. Harold went on to work for the Alberta Hotel Association for many years. In retirement, he and Carol made many trips to Japan and China and were Canadian parents for a number of international students. Harold is survived by his wife, Carol; three children, Lynn (Doug) Barsaloux, Dale (Gale) Berry, and Susan (Ward) Fanning. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Kirsten, Keith, Haley, Keenan, Merrick and Maria and four great grandchildren, Kaiden, Cathrine, Ottilia and Evette, as well as other extended family. Harold was predeceased by his parents, John and Ida; brothers, Wallace and Daryl, and his youngest son, James Victor. The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the staff at Staywell Manor, Dr. Fraser and the staff on Unit 93, Rockyview General Hospital for the care provided to Harold in the last months and days.
A Celebration of Harold’s Life will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Calgary Association of Self Help, 1019 7 Ave S.W., Calgary, AB T2P 1A8 or a charity of one’s choice.
