I loved to listen to Heini's stories, about his travel by foot after the war, how he fell in love with your Oma.  Amazing... that will stay with me forever. I have nice magazine rack and some wooden tulips. My son Frank has a wooden bulldozer, that your Opa made for him about 14 years ago.
He was an amazing man, who definitely carried his burden with dignity.

den geliebten Mann und verehrten Opa zu verlieren, ist ein schwerer Schlag! Was euch jedoch immer bleiben wird, ist die Erinnerung an einen großartigen Mann!

Für mich war Onkel Heini immer mehr als ein Onkel im fernen Canada. Mit ihm konnte ich am Telefon über alles sprechen, Politik, Hockey oder die Familie. Gerne erinnere ich mich an die vielen Male als zunächst ich im Jahre 1970 und später wir als Familie in Calgary zu Besuch waren oder Onkel Heini und du, Tante Annchen, zu Besuch in Deutschland wart. Besonders berührend waren die beiden Fahrten in Onkel Heinis alte Heimat nach Wittenburg in Mecklenburg, viele Erinnerungen wurden wieder lebendig!

Noch wenige Tage vor Onkel Heinis letztem Geburtstag hatten Astrid und ich ein längeres Telefonat und für seinen Geburtstag verabredeten wir das nächste, zu dem es nun leider nicht mehr kam. Es war schon zu erkennen, dass seine Kräfte schwanden und die Last seiner Beschwerden ihm immer mehr zu schaffen machte. Wenn ich mir heute seinen langen Lebensweg vor Augen halte, der wahrlich nicht einfach war, dann sage ich nur: Respekt vor diesem Leben mit all seinen Lasten, die er klaglos getragen hat.

Wie schön war es, dass wir vor 2 Jahren im Kreise der Familie und mit Freunden noch seinen 90. Geburtstag feiern konnten! Astrid, Angela und ich werden Onkel Heini stets in bester Erinnerung behalten; er wird immer einen besonderen Platz in unserem Herzen haben.

Memories of Uncle Heini
My memories of Uncle Heini go back more than half a century. Our home wasn't more than 50 meters away from the estate of the Büsing family. Both families lived in the “Große Straße” (Main Street) in Wittenburg.
For me as a young boy it was very exciting to stay at the Büsing farm estate. I remember well the barn with the two heavy horses and the cows and Max – the dark warmblood for the one-horse carriage. In the summer we took the carriage to go to the pastures to milk the cows which stayed outside during this season. While the cows were being milked I went on a mushroom foray. Aunt Annchen and Uncle Heini always enjoyed taking me along.
Both had always worked a lot. There was a compulsory delivery quota in place for the farmers in the former German-Democratic Republic (GDR) which was difficult to meet even for larger farms. That way they forced the farms into collectivization. More and more farmers started leaving the country – and so did Uncle Heini and Aunt Annchen. 
I was very sad to see them leave since I carried Annchen's veil during their wedding. Sometimes when I spent time on their estate they gave me a glass of milk or a slice of cold meat – Annchen's mother-in-law, Aunt Marie, wasn't meant to see that.

In the postwar period there wasn't much food available and Aunt Annchen was always pleased when I enjoyed eating. 
Even though I was only a school boy back then, I was able to comprehend the reasons for the escape to the West.
My Dad who took over the grocer's store from my grand-father Friedrich Baumann also constantly complained about the unequal treatment of private businesses over state firms. He also considered escaping to the West however believed that “they wouldn't persist forever”. This was, as we now know today, a mistake which lasted until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
Back then Uncle Heini surely did not think of becoming a Canadian and I had not dared to believe that one day I would be the Prime Minister of this state “Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania” and also President of the Federal Council of Germany.
I studied Chemistry and prior to the German Reunification I had not thought of becoming a politician one day. However, at all costs I was determined to interfere in this situation of upheaval in order to permanently change the conditions in the East and not to leave the fields to the turncoats. 
From my own experience I know that starting from scratch requires a lot of courage. Aunt Annchen and Uncle Heini did have that courage to go to a country with a foreign language and start a new life. I have always admired that.
They also had the courage to visit their home country – even when the GDR still existed.  They also set aside some time to visit my mother, Lotte Ringstorff. What an excitement! Guests from Canada! I remember well the little figure which they brought along – a carved Eskimo.
This year I will turn 75 already and I start to realize that the last years have been quite exhausting for me. There are fewer people now around who can still talk about the old days. That is why I enjoyed writing down some of my memories and thoughts for your book.

I have the fondest memories of dear Henry and Anna, whom I have always regarded as family.  Their love and kindness knows no bounds.  I am deeply saddened to learn of Henry's passing and pray he has found peace and comfort.  Henry was a rare gift to this world and, to those who knew him, a light has dimmed.

I still fondly think back to our frequent ski trips, to biking in the Kananaskis Mountains and to uncounted visits in each other's homes. Henry was a constant and true friend to all of us.
