Helen was born on her family’s farm near Estevan, Saskatchewan. She was the youngest of seven children. Helen’s mother died when she was 13. That, combined with years of drought, caused the family to abandon the farm and rejoin their family in Ontario. It was here she met Stan and they were married in 1941. Shortly afterwards Stan was sent overseas with the Canadian Armed Forces for the duration of WWII. During those war years, Helen worked 12 hour shifts in a small arms factory. They were reunited after the war and started their family. The family moved frequently until 1957 when they settled in Calgary. In 1959, Stan and Helen built a house in the community of Glamorgan where Helen lived for over 50 years. She was widowed in 1992. Helen had a lifelong love for horses and continued riding until she was over 85. She had a wonderful work ethic and was always there to give a helping hand. Helen was fiercely independent, and not one to complain.
She is survived by her three children James, Wendy and Arleen.
