Born in Dongjingcheng, China, Hude was the fourth son of Lianglian Quan and Jinyu Li. He grew up in a Korean-Chinese Christian family but accepted Jesus Christ later in life. He was baptized in 1997 and his faith in God guided him for the rest of his life.
Dr. Quan completed MD and MSc degrees at Harbin Medical University and trained at the University of London. In 1998, he completed his PhD in Epidemiology and served as a professor under the Department of Community Health Sciences for 26 years until his passing.
Hude was a leader in the development of health data tools and standards, improving patient care and guiding health policy. He was the founding director of a UofC WHO Collaborating Centre and the Centre for Health Informatics, a research hub advancing precision medicine. Hude is remembered for his mentorship and leadership, leaving behind an extensive academic legacy and supporting more than 35 master’s, PhD and postdoctoral trainees.
Hude is survived by his wife Sarah and his two sons, Samuel and Joshua. Hude especially enjoyed the outdoors and travelling. He was deeply committed to his Christian faith, serving God as an elder at Truth Baptist Church and enthusiastically sharing words of hope and faith with others whenever he could. After a four-and-a-half-year journey with metastatic cholangiocarcinoma, Hude passed away peacefully at home on Monday, February 2, 2026.
A Celebration of Life for Hude Quan will be held at Foothills Alliance Church, 333 Edgepark Boulevard N.W., Calgary, AB, on Saturday, February 28, 2026, 10:00 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and celebrate the life of Hude!
