It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ian MacDonald, beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, at the age of 86 years. He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife Mary of 64 years, his three daughters Leslie (Doug), Leisa and Tara (Craig) and his seven grandchildren, Meagan, Ethan, Geoffrey, Kirsten, Avery, Qwyn and Ellexa. He was predeceased by his parents, Roderick and Marion (MacLellan) and angel granddaughter, Emma.
Ian was born and raised in Calgary where at the young age of 20 he joined the Calgary Police Service in 1956. He enjoyed a long successful career of 31 years where he contributed to the creation of the forces first Canine Division. This was probably one of many highlights of his career as he had such a love for animals. He was known to be a prankster with coworkers where it occasionally landed him in his Sergeants office for a stern talking to. During his career Ian enjoyed many good times and created lifelong relationships that he dearly cherished. Ian was also a great storyteller where he loved to share his experiences on the force. He could remember many cases he was involved in with explicit detail. His storytelling would capture anyone’s attention who was willing to sit for a few hours, in the end you would never be disappointed.
When he retired he built the family home at Windermere Lake where he loved to be outside working around the yard. Ian loved being outdoors, gardening, carpentry, going to the Calgary Flames games and was an avid reader. But what he loved most was when his daughters and grandchildren would come to visit him and Mom at the lake.
The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to all the Doctors, nurses, and very special caregivers at the Intercare Chinook Care Centre for their great care of our father.
