Irene May Powell passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at the age of 83 years. Born on September 24, 1926 in Drumheller, Alberta, Irene grew up there until she moved to Calgary when she was sixteen years old. Her first job was working for the large Burns and Co. located in Calgary. Irene’s mother’s family immigrated from Estonia and her dad was from Halkirk, Alberta. She was the second youngest of five children (three sisters and one brother). In 1950 she met her future husband at a Calgary dance hall called Penleys . Back then this was one of the best places to meet people in Calgary and they both loved to dance. They dated for several years then she married Stanley Powell in July of 1953. They had two children, daughter Marilyn, son Don (Ann) and a granddaughter Carley, all of Calgary. Irene is survived by two sisters, Alma from Calgary, and Margaret from Kelowna and numerous nieces and nephews. Irene’s career, until she retired, was working in the bindery departments of several local printing shops in Calgary. Irene and Stan loved the outdoors, this included camping, fishing and travelling throughout western Canada and the United States in their motor home. Her hobbies also included knitting, crochet and painting scenery pictures. In January of 2008, Irene’s husband, Stan of fifty-four years passed away. This was a time of great sadness for her and her family. Our mom really missed her husband, but she knew one day they would be back together dancing. She will be lovingly missed by her family, friends and the neighbours in the community she has known for a long time. The family wishes to thank the Bayshore Home Health caregivers for helping out with our mothers care. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at a visitation held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Friday, August 27, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
