October 28, 1918 – July 7, 2012
Jack passed on peacefully on Saturday, July 7, 2012 after a brief illness and a long life well-lived. Born and raised in Calgary, the son of John and Mary White was a proud veteran of the Canadian Army, having been stationed near London, England during W.W.II. At war’s end, he returned to Calgary with his new Irish bride Rose Hamel, the mother of his three children. He worked as a journeyman auto mechanic at G.S.L. and later as a senior instructor of Automotive Technology at S.A.I.T. for almost 30 years until his retirement in 1984. Jack was a devoted husband, an exceptional father, and a true gentleman. His intelligence and great, often self-deprecating humour, stood out to all who knew him. His mastery of witty plays on words might be exemplified in this typical Jackism: “You might say I’m a wit, but you’d only be half right”. He left us with loving family by his side, and, of course, still charming his nurses, who, incidentally, had labeled him their “93 year-old chick magnet”. Jack is survived by his two daughters, Pat Gray (Pete), and Jackie Watt (John), both of Calgary, and son Brian White (Cynthia) of Courtenay, BC; four grandchildren, Lorelei Romero (Karl), Sunny White, Michael and Steven Watt (Jaime); and three great grandchildren, Cassidy, Kyle and Sage. Special thanks to the staff of the Chinook Care Centre Hospice. A celebration of Jack’s life will take place from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2012 in the RKR room of the Royal Canadian Legion No. 264 – 1910 Kensington Road N.W. Calgary. In lieu of flowers, if friends so chose, donations may be made directly to the Calgary Poppy Fund: #1, 4539 – 6 Street N.E. Calgary, AB, T2E 3Z6 or online at calgarypoppyfund.com. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
