After World War II, in 1947, Jakob ended up in Berlin at an MCC refugee camp which made arrangements for him, his mother, three brothers and sister to be shipped to Paraguay via Asuncion, Argentina. He met the love of his life Herta Giesbrecht in Rosenthal, Paraguay and they were married on September 19, 1953. From Paraguay they moved to Argentina in 1955, then Brazil in 1957 and finally to Calgary, Alberta in 1958.
Jakob and Herta just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on September 19, 2023.
Jakob is survived by his wife Herta Harms, three sons Herb (Rosemary) Rick (Rosemary) Art (Jamie), eleven grandchildren; Julie (Patrick), Michelle (Keith), Philip (Rosalyn), Darrell (Heather), Ellery (Keith), Alex (Amanda), Victoria (Chris), Renee (Winston), Eva (James), Delaney (Ryan), Ben (Jamie) and twenty-six great grandchildren. He is also remembered by his brothers Hans (Anastasia), and Frank, his sister Eva and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jakob is predeceased by his parents Jakob and Selma Harms, his youngest brother Peter Harms and sister-in-law Lola Harms.
A Funeral Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Sunday, December 3, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. Interment to follow at Queen's Park Cemetery.
