

It is with saddened hearts the family announces John’s passing on Monday, August 22, 2016, in Calgary, AB at the age of 88 years. He was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Alice in 1998. John Delwel was born to Willem and Willemina in Rotterdam, Netherlands as the sixth of eight children. He did his stint in the Dutch army after WWII, travelling overseas - peacekeeping in Indonesia before coming to Canada in 1955. Travelling across Canada, John ended up in Calgary as a mechanic where he met his wife and settled down to raise his family. He went on to work at a steel shop until he semi-retired and then at the bank until his retirement at 65. He will be lovingly remembered by his children: Sylvia Mathieson, Wilma (Sam) Campese, John (Pauline) Delwel and Nancy (Shane) Hanna; nine grandchildren; as well as one great-grandchild. John is survived by his two sisters, Gre and Miep in Holland. A Celebration of Life will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, AB (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of their choice. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
