It is with profound sadness that we announce that Janice has passed away on August 9, 2025, at the age of 62 in Calgary, Alberta. Janice was a beloved mother, wife, daughter, sister, and friend, whose life was defined by her dedication to her family, friends, and community.
She leaves a legacy of unshakeable integrity, kindness, loyalty, and dedication to the ones she loved. She was known for her willingness to fight for the causes she believed in, an intuition that was always on the mark, and her incredibly sharp wit. Through every challenge, she displayed an inspiring amount of grace and strength.
Janice was born on November 8, 1962, in St. Catharines, Ontario to Arlene and Peter Paskey. After graduating from Carleton University with a BA in Journalism, she spent the 90s working in Montreal as the editor of the McGill News Alumni Magazine and then moved to Calgary in 1998 with her family. She worked as Avenue Magazine's editor, followed by 17 years at the journalism faculty at Mount Royal University, where she found her calling teaching the next generation of journalists. She was a respected professor, editor, and organizer who inspired many.
Janice was a tireless volunteer, giving her time and energy to causes close to her heart. Those who worked with her will surely remember her unwavering dedication.
Janice leaves her husband Marc Coyte, sons Adam and Matthew Paskey-Coyte (Daphnée Chouinard), sister Gail Paskey, cousin Cindy Paskey, and mother Arlene (Legros) Paskey. She is preceded in death by her father Peter Paskey. They will remember her toughness, compassion, and love.
We would like to thank all the doctors, surgeons, nurses, and healthcare workers in Calgary and Edmonton who put in countless hours and effort to make sure Janice was taken care of.
A simple Catholic Funeral Service will be held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. During the chapel portion of the service, we would strongly encourage people to wear a mask to protect immunocompromised attendees. Masks will be provided. Thank you for your understanding.
