Remembering Jean Elaine MacLaughlin

July 18, 1940 - March 23, 2026

We are saddened to announce the passing our dear Elaine on March 23, 2026

Jean Elaine MacLaughlin was born in July 1940 in Ottawa, Ontario, to the late Douglas and Vera (Fleck) MacLaughlin. Elaine was the middle child of three and was predeceased by her older sister, Shirley Ann MacLaughlin, and her younger brother, James MacLaughlin.

Elaine is lovingly remembered by her partner of more than 25 years, Deanna Hawkins; her daughter, Penelope MacLaughlin; and her cherished grandchildren, Anne Anderson, Jonathan Anderson, Avery Kats, Aislyn Kats, Brayden Edwards, and Dylan Edwards, a beloved cousin Dianne Geddes, and many extended family members and friends.

Elaine began her career as a nurse, working in Nova Scotia in the fields of obstetrics and pediatrics, where she found deep fulfillment in caring for others. Answering a call to ministry, she was ordained in 1986 with the United Church of Canada. Over the next 30 years, Elaine served as a compassionate and dedicated leader in communities throughout Saskatchewan, touching many lives with her kindness, wisdom, and gentle spirit.

It was in Saskatchewan that Elaine met Deanna, and together they built a life grounded in love, partnership, and shared purpose. Following their years of work and family life, they retired in 2003 and spent time enjoying the warmth, culture, and community of Arizona, including Wellton, Yuma and Mesa.

Elaine had a spirited love of card games and was always ready for a friendly competition often emerging as the winner with a smile. She also had a deep love of music. Throughout her years in ministry, she found joy in playing the piano and singing in choirs. More recently, while living at Age Care Glenmore, Elaine continued to share her gift of song, brightening the days of staff and residents alike with her humming and singing.

Her family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Age Care Glenmore for the compassionate care and support she received.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Elaine’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.

A private service will be held at a later date.
