John Patrick McAuley, a cherished father, grandfather, brother and beloved husband, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 26, 2025. A week past celebrating his 85th birthday, and a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to his family. Born in Glasgow, Scotland on February 18th 1940, he was the son of Anne and James.
John will be remembered for his kind heart, infectious smile, and constant support for his loved ones. He was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word and took immense pride in his work. John worked as a Resident Manager for Rancho Reality for over 30 years, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, who fondly called him "Granda."
John moved from Scotland in February of 1973 to build a new life in Canada. His beloved wife Janet followed to Calgary, Alberta, in May of 1973 with their three children.
John had many pals that would gather with him at the local pub each week to watch the football matches. You could always count on seeing him there in his green and white hoops to show his support for his favorite Football Club, as he was a die-hard Celtic fan. In his later years, John would meet weekly at the Side Street Pub & Grill with his best friend Andy, who he spoke highly of and held dear to his heart like a brother.
John was generous with his time, wisdom and resources. He was confident, well spoken, open minded and humble in all of his relationships, not just with family and friends but also with his tenants and coworkers.
John is predeceased by his wife Janet, parents Anne and James, brother James and sister Monica. He leaves behind his sister Anne (Eric) Edgar, his three children; Karen Woodhouse, John McAuley and Aileen (Dee) Fortney, four grandchildren; Kimberly (Kendle) Smith, Bradley (Krystal) Gordon, Rachel (TJ) Jordan and Jennifer (Dave) Johnston, and five great grandchildren; Summer, Sage, Aubree, James and Jaxon, as well as a long line of relatives back home in Scotland, all of whom he loved dearly and asked for regularly.
The legacy John leaves behind is immeasurable but can be found in the values he instilled, the wisdom he taught, the memories we cherish, and the love he shared so freely. We will miss his warm hugs, his words of encouragement, and his unwavering support.
“John, Dad, Granda," you were our hero, our confidant, our guiding light. Your love will continue to inspire us for generations to come.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Ascension Catholic Parish, 1100 Berkshire Blvd NW, Calgary AB.
