Reverend John Nielsen passed away peacefully in Calgary, AB on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at the age of 87 years. John is lovingly remembered by his daughter Ellen, son Dale, and four grandchildren: Bryce, Maren, Shania and Austin. He is also survived by his sister Inger. John was predeceased by his wife Martha Adele in February 2003; parents Lauritz and Ellen; brother Asger and sisters Martha and Betty. John was born in Denmark and was very proud of his heritage. He came to Canada at age four and the family settled in Calgary, followed by Kamloops and Port Alberni, BC. In WWII, he entered the Royal Canadian Air Force and then went on to Seminary in St Louis, Missouri. John met Martha, a teacher, in Red Deer, AB while on student vicarage in 1952. They married in July of 1954 and raised two children. They enjoyed church activities, camping and fishing. In 1990, they retired in Calgary. John always loved day trips in the car and good apple pie, even as late as December 2012. Goodbye, Poppa. ‘Our Feet Are the Same. A Funeral Service will be held at Foothills Lutheran Church, 3104 – 34 Avenue NW, Calgary, AB on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will take place one hour prior to service. Interment will take place at Queen’s Park Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. The family wishes to thank the staff of Chinook Care Centre (Chinook Park Wing), Pastor Bode, Joyce & Murray Kee, the Jansonius family, and Yvette & Christian Campeau.
