It is with deep sorrow but loving hearts that we announce the sudden, yet peaceful passing of John Kenneth Topping, a beloved husband, father and grandfather, on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at the age of 79 years.
John will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by Marilyn, his devoted wife of 48 years. He is survived by his five children, Melodie (Geoff), Tyler (Katherine), Robynne (Mike), Kyley and Gillian (Chris). He will be forever missed by his nine adoring grandchildren, Brooklynne, Greyson, Savannah, Dylan, Devynne, Blake, Bentley, Rylie and Nolan. He is also survived by his two sisters, Chris (John), Lynn (Harley), his brother James (Linda), as well as numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Joyce Topping.
John was born on August 27, 1946, in Guisborough, North Yorkshire, England, and within three months immigrated to Canada with his mother, to reunite with his father who had already established a home in this country. The family lived in Westcott, Alberta, where John would spend his childhood and eventually become the oldest brother to three younger siblings. His formative years in a rural community helped shape his strong resilience, work ethic and the importance of family values.
In the early 1970’s, John moved from his small community to the big city of Calgary, Alberta to pursue post-secondary education in accounting and begin his career in the oil and gas industry. In 1973, John met the love of his life, Marilyn. They would marry in June of 1977 and together were blessed with three daughters and two sons. Throughout the years, John worked for numerous companies in Calgary and eventually retired from Advantage Energy in 2013. During his career, he had the opportunity to serve as the president of the Petroleum Accountants Society and was awarded the distinction of a lifetime honorary member.
John was known for his patience, kindness, his quiet compassion and humor. He could make any situation funny and would always be the first one with a “dad” joke. He always brought a smile to the faces of everyone around him. His greatest accomplishment was his family, and his life was truly centered around his wife, children and grandchildren, who affectionately referred to him as Poppy. His love for his children was never ending and his grandchildren adored being in his presence.
For those wishing to pay their final respects, a Funeral Service will be held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4th Street NW, Calgary, Alberta on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at 2:00 pm, with an opportunity for visitation prior to the services. Interment will follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
