It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of Joe Popiel. On Thursday, February 22, 2018, at the South Health Campus, the world truly lost a great man, father and husband. As some of you know, over the past year Joe courageously battled cancer for a third time. Unfortunately, complications arose from the disease and despite a valiant fight, he was taken from us too soon. We are truly heartbroken.
Joe is survived by his wife, Grace; his sons and their families, Jeff, Holly, Chloe & Lexie and Sheldon, Kim, Ella, Easton & Beckham; his step-daughters and their families, Jackie, Mike, Josh & Breanna and Christine, Barron & Elijah. He is also survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Emily, Michael, Betty, Bob and Joanie; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family. Joe was predeceased by his wife Iris in 2004, his mother Winnie in 2007, his sister Adele in 1990 and his father Michael in 1979.
We are certain to miss his huge heart, his caring nature, his kindness, his positive attitude, his love of life and his guidance in our family. His spirit will be felt forever in us and will be forever missed.
A Memorial to celebrate Joe’s life will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery), on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at 2:00 p.m.
Our family would like to express our appreciation for all the prayers and support we have received from our loved ones. We would also like to thank Dr. Celis, Dr. Monzon, the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and specifically, the staff of Unit 78 at the South Health Campus for their incredible care of Joe through his final days. Should you wish to express your sympathy through donation, please support the Tom Baker Cancer Centre at https://albertacancer.ca/donate/cancer-centres.
Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
