Words cannot express the sadness Emily and I feel with the loss of her brother Joe. Over the past many years we have had the good fortune of enjoying many visits as well as weekly phone calls. Our shared vacations in Mexico and winters in Arizona were some of the best times of our lives. They were filled with love, laughter, good food, and good wine. We will always remember Joe as a special person with a huge caring heart, and great passion for life. We miss him dearly. Michael and Emily Olexson White Rock, B.C.

We were shocked and with great sorrow to hear of Joe's passing. I grew upon an adjacent farm and knew Joe from birth thru to grade 12. We went to a 1 - room country school(grades 1 to 8) and the onto a small Yellow Creek high school from grades 9 to 12. After high school we all departed in different directions seeking our respective careers. Thru-out those farm years we had many fond memories such as playing slough hockey, being teammates on the Saskatchewan provincial soccer championship winning team, playing baseball,  as kids using hollow tube plant pea shooters to hit ea. other with ripe chokecherries ( original paint ball concept) much to the chagrin of our mothers, chasing ea. other playing cowboys & Indians till one day Joe in trying to escape his cousin Edward, tripped and broke his arm.  I remember riding on the handle bars on Joe's bike down a steep graveled hill road and crashing into a ditch full of thorns - no broken bones only bruises. Joe was a gifted musician and used to practise with his cousin Edward in their farm shed & on a quiet evening we could hear them from half a mile away. we remember numerous birthday parties, anniversaries & weddings and always felt included. the years we kept in touch occasionally meeting up to reminisce the good old days. Joe was extremely proud of his sons and their respective families. It was a privilege to be part of Joe & Iris's wedding party. Our deepest condolences go out to all the family members. Joe will be missed.

My sincere condolences to the entire Popiel family, especially to Joe’s two sons Jeff and Sheldon whom he proudly spoke about with such great enthusiasm.

I had the privilege of working with Joe for 8 years at Esslinger Foods, and he was a wonderful mentor and role model.  Joe was a consummate professional.  He always had his customers best interests at heart, and he was always professional, courteous and engaging with his colleagues at head office.  Everybody loved picking up the phone when Joe called.

Joe was an instrumental part of the Esslinger Foods sales force, relentlessly building his territory even in the face of personal adversity.  Joe was respected by his customers, colleagues, and was held in the highest regard by the Esslinger family for the contributions he made.

When I envision Joe, I think of him telling a story or a joke that often ended with the expression “honest to fact” and a big smile. A few years ago we caught up over lunch in Calgary and Joe’s smile was as big as ever!  He told me the story of meeting Grace; filled me in on his son’s latest endeavours and we spoke together about music and work.

I count myself lucky to have met someone like Joe.  He will be sorely missed.


We are so sad to hear of Joe's passing.  He was such a great man and his kindness, joyfulness, and love of life, are such great qualities to be remembered for.  We are so fortunate to have been blessed to have him in our lives and to be recipients of his love and kindness.  Our hope for Jeff and Sheldon and their families that their hearts heal and their memories stay strong.  Sending much love and many hugs and hope for peace in your hearts.  

Joe RIP. I was saddened by your passing. We attended the Yellow Creek high school circa early 60s. You are best remembered by your talent for music, having played the fiddle, guitar and of course sang. During the high school era we played in the polka style band which featured you on fiddle. Hundreds of local weddings around Yellow Creek. Post high school ,  we all parted into the world and seldom did we meet again. However, you are still vividly in my memory as a great guy who loved to sing and play in band. Music was still your priority  throughout your life. My deepest condolences to your immediate family and all your many friends. We all know that you are now in better place, perhaps still playing a polka on the fiddle. Take care my friend and rest in peace. 

Dear Grace & Family;  It is with heart felt sorrow that we offer our condolences on the passing of Joe, he was such a kind and sincere man full of compassion.   Although we didn't know Joe for a very long time, it  seemed like we were good friends forever.  You are all in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
