Joyce (nee Kunelius) Dann

Joyce was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Christopher Dann (2015). She is survived by two daughters, Suzan Dann (Daniel), Sadie Dann (Ian), and stepchildren Mary Palm and Evan Dann.

She is also survived by siblings Karen Kunelius, Rick Kunelius (Maureen); brother-in-law, Robin Dann (Dixie); and several nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her younger sister, Kathryn Ingrid (2015).

Her lifelong passion for travel began after she worked as a teacher for CUSO in Trinidad when she spent her summer vacation hitchhiking solo across South America (in 1966!) followed by two more years with CUSO - in Thailand.

She met Chris while doing her Master’s degree at University of Calgary. They married and taught in two Indigenous communities in Alberta before moving to Ottawa for 20 years.

She loved her work and was a dedicated teacher of ESL at the University of Ottawa and, returning west, at Bow Valley College in Calgary - mingled with brief teaching stints in Russia and China.

After retirement she and Chris spent their winters exploring the globe.

Throughout their travels she continued collecting artisanal objects, delighting in meeting and purchasing from the artists themselves.

Joyce was also defined by her enduring respect, compassion and help for those less privileged.

You can remember her with donations to organizations supporting immigrants and refugees.

Her family and friends will remember her as kind, generous, and loving, who enjoyed sharing happy hour; anytime - anywhere.

We have lost a wonderful remarkable woman. She is deeply missed by family and wide network of friends.
