Our loved one passed away at Chinook Hospice in Calgary on September 11, 2025 at the age of 93. Survived by her three loving children Marlyss (Ron Valiant) of Calgary, Marvin (Terry) of Chicago, and Laura (Dave Loohuizen) of Kenora; her grandchildren Theresa (Rich Zeller), Angela (Neil MacGillivray), Emily (Sam Stucker), Sujeong, Abby, and Darian (Remy); five great-grandchildren Cayden, Kayleigh, Bernard, Hayden, and Nico; sisters Lois Evans and Arlene Gess and so many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her loving husband of 56 years, Clifford Richardson, parents Henry and Nina Pederson, brother Vernon Pederson, and grandson Clinton.
Kay was born in Talmage, Saskatchewan in 1932, the eldest girl in a close-knit farming family. One of her formative memories was “driving” three miles to school by horse-drawn wagon or cutter with skis – a very cold trip for the 4 children during the long Saskatchewan winters. After her education, Kay in turn taught several years in a one room school. She met Cliff at a dance in Moose Jaw and they married in 1954. Together they built a life and raised a family with deep love and commitment, remaining loyal and devoted partners until Cliff’s passing in 2011.
Their Bar-CR farm near Teulon, Manitoba was at the center of Richardson family life for 60 years, a place where children, grandchildren, and friends gathered. Kay raised three children while managing a huge garden, canning vegetables and berries, and baking the breads, buns, shortbread cookies, and pies for which she was famous. Kay and the entire family were committed members of the Teulon Gospel Tabernacle. She instilled strong family values, ensured each of her children pursued their own paths, and rejoiced in the stability of seeing them marry and raise families of their own.
Kay was smart, thoughtful, and fiercely independent. She never wanted to inconvenience anyone. She loved birds and flowers, and delighted in bird-watching excursions around the farm and at Oak Hammock Marsh. Her prolific letter-writing, complete with elegant penmanship and remarkably tiny handwriting, is well remembered by all who received her notes.
Her memorial service will be held on Friday, September 19th at 3:00p.m. at Southview Church: 20200 Walden Blvd SE Calgary, AB T2X 0N4. Interment will follow at a later date in Erinview Cemetery in Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kay’s memory to the Canadian Wildlife Federation (https://cwf-fcf.org/en/donate/) or the Heart & Stroke Foundation (https://www.heartandstroke.ca/)
