October 10, 1943 – January 14, 2013
It is with great sorrow that our family announces the unexpected passing of Kenneth James Scabar on Monday, January 14, 2013 at the age of 69 years. Born in Camrose Alberta, Ken is survived by his loving spouse Marg Materi; daughters Sherry (Dean) Rask, Connie (Rory) Buchanan, son Vincent Scabar; their mother Sally Scabar; four grandchildren, Cade and Cruz Scabar and Adam and April Rask. He is also survived by sisters Joanne (Bill) Hendrix, Barbara Scabar; brothers Rick (Natalia) Scabar, Merlin (Barb) Scabar; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Ken was predeceased by his father John Scabar and his mother Stella (Paul) Kalawsky (Nee Maslanka). He was a loving husband and a proud loving father who was involved in all aspects of his family’s activities including coaching his children’s hockey and baseball teams. Ken would do anything for his family. Later in life, he became a very proud grandpa who would light up and beam from ear to ear whenever he spent time with his grandchildren. Always a hard worker himself, Ken made sure that he instilled the same values in his children. For many years, he worked as a heavy duty mechanic and later as a foreman in various countries abroad. He was currently employed by the City of Calgary. No matter what he did, Ken was highly regarded and extremely respected by both his fellow employees and his employers. As an avid sports enthusiast, he loved to curl and play hockey. On weekends he enjoyed watching all kinds of sports but especially the Flames and Stampeders. Later in life, he and Marg were active members of the the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 286. Ken volunteered weekly to assist in whatever job was necessary. Those who knew Ken, knew him to be generous to a fault for he would give you his last $5.00 if you needed it. He will be remembered for his keen sense of humour, which was almost always evident in poems he composed in cards given to family and friends. Ken was a kind, warm-hearted soul who will be missed by those who had the pleasure of knowing him. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at a visitation held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Friday, January 18, 2013 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Cremation to follow. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Ken’s name to the charity of one’s choice. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
