Laura Buchanan passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, AB on Friday, September 6, 2013 at the age of 93 years. She is sadly missed by her son Barry; Daughter-in-law Gina; grandkids David and Patrick; nieces and nephews Doreen, Walter, Hillary Ann, Alex, Jack, Gerald, Neil, Marjorie, Janet, Ken, Francis, Anna, Marie Claire, Mark, Shane, Grant, Donald, Christina, Linda, Rod, Bruce, Sue, Pat and Pam; as well as her best friend from childhood and maid of honour, Hattie Griffis. Laura is predeceased by the love of her life and travelling companion Gordon; sister Alice Sturla; parents Jessie and Maude Strum; niece Barbara McNair; Uncle Harvey (Nettie) Strum; “brothers” Herbert and Edward; brothers Joe and James (during spring of 1923). Laura was born in Unity, Saskatchewan in 1919 and moved to Edmonton in 1923. She graduated in 1938 from Commercial High in Edmonton along with many of the girls of “The Grads” basketball team (1935-1945). From 1939 to 1945, she worked in war efforts with the Canadian National Railways and The Alberta Department of Agriculture on shipping war materials. She met Gordon in 1950 and they were married on June 5, 1954. Son Barry was born in May 1955. Laura was active in the Girlguides from the 1930’s to 1950. She travelled all over Canada with Hattie during the 1940’s and 1950’s. Mom loved sports, baking, riding, bowling, bingo and other games. Mom’s faithful pet Spaz was a source of great joy, comfort and companionship. A Memorial Service will be held at Renfrew Community Hall (828 - 8 Avenue NE) on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. with the Reverend James of All Saints Traditional Anglican Church officiating. A private Interment will follow at Queens Park Field of Honour. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to Girl Guides of Canada, All Saints Traditional Anglican Church, Canadian Bible Society or the Pet Rescue Society of your choosing.
